Bottom line,
Just like Excel, with same $500. required up front, if you know the history of Excel, they were able to fight off regulators for years who were after them because the mass majority were making the money from what is called headhunting, or recruiting for pay.
If you strip out the $500. from compensation plan, no one would ever make enough to justify the effort in the most competitive industry ever, the telcom industry. Ask anyone what they are making on actual telcom services sold to anyone, and you will never get an anwer, and that is what everyone should base their decisions on, not what those super headhunters are earning.
Personally, when a person puts up their $500., if people are aware of where all the money is coming from, a company should be allowed to use this model, and many have, but for the majority, they will never earn back their investment, but the ones who work it can, and this is no different in all the programs that charge $500. to join. There are many similar structures in both TelCom and Travel, and for good reason, you can't hope to make much selling the actual services, remove the headhunter cost and you just removed the income, and that is the bottom line.
There are very few TelCom deals where you can make much selling the actual services. The latest trend is in the VOIP industry whereby they promote saving money, but after you get in you learn you won't be saving anything. When choosing a company, the one with the lowest upfront cost is the best rule of thumb when making your decision. The higher the start up cost, the less potential for the mass majority who start their own business.
I have been in the TelCom industry since deregulation, and I made some good money over the years, but this was before the market became so competitive and profits were squeezed out of traditional TelCom. The only way to make money in TelCom these days is by making it on headhunting, or have a new VOIP-COIP technology which puts dial tone to your mobile phone bypassing peak bandwidth issues due to texting explosion which sucks bandwidth to a point the new iPhone 3GS was not being supported by AT&T as was reported in Wall Street Journal finally exposing the cellular industries secret, they are running out of bandwidth. Get ahead of a trend in any industry and you will at least have a shot at success, and VOIP-COIP industry is about to explode as it addresses this issue head on, and is cost free to join industry leader, no headhunting, a first. lol
Success to all,

Hello Everyone, I posted this back in 2006 when I was a student at UCI. I am no longer doing research on ACN so please stop emailing me. If you want to know whether or not I think it's a scam- I can't say that you won't make money at all, but I can say that even if you are the best salesperson in the world, MLMs are a dead end street regardless of the market. Eventually you will run out of people to sell to.
