I have been a member of this forum for some time. One of the things that bothers me most is the amount of self-promotion and spam that always shows up.
Most people who come to this forum are looking for advice on work at home jobs or opportunities. When I first joined, I started learning a lot from the other members. I think that is why all the people who join, spam, or leave links to their own site then leave never to be seen again bother me so much.
I happened upon this forum by chance, looking for ways to work at home, and actually put a link within the post just to promote myself and my site. Vishal was very gratious and deleted the link, but not the comment and asked me to read the Terms of Use.
I found out that being an active member and trying to help others brought rewards of it's own. I have gotten more links through my signature than any one time link could ever get, all because I try to contribute and give back to the forum that helped me.
I realize that "spam happens" but I still don't appreciate it. I found that a good, constructive conversation helps much more in the long run. I feel that this is a much better way of self-promotion than a hit or miss type of approach.
So, thanks for listening to my rant, and hope I can be of help to someone looking for answers to questions.

Well said Joe However, no matter how much you stress on the benefits on posting genuine content, there will always be spammers. This is like most things in life. If there is good, there has to be evil.

Hi Joe,
The only forum that I know that does not allow spamming or self promotion and is strictly enforced is Webmaster World. You see the word "Clip" in posts and you know someone was trying to spam the boards.
Personally - The good content that is needed today is more on the encouragment side than anything else -
There are so many venues available to work at home - Online being the number one IMHO. That focus and encouragment to others is the biggest help. "Soapbox Off"
Ultimately the spamming and self-promotion stuff is here to stay and it's up to us and the moderators or owners of the boards to police the spammers.
Just my two cents.

I totally agree with you, Joe. And there are two phrases in your statement that go to the crux of the matter: in the long run and hit or miss.
The truly serious and sober work-at-home entrepreneur is usually in it for the long run, and will:
1. have greater respect for forum rules and members
2. take full advantage of the opportunity to learn and share
3. develop solid marketing relationships over time
Whereas, the hit or miss visitor is often of a different mindset. They tend to be inexperienced, lack the support of clearly defined goals, and bring a casual attitude with them. Many of them are still experimenting with the idea of working at home.
We are taught that it's better to give than to receive. Giving and receiving are opposite ends of the same pole. The ironic truth is that it's impossible to do one without the other.
At the micro level, when you give, someone at the other end immediately receives. On the broader marco and karmic level, your act of giving (and the state of mind in which it is given) is recorded in the ether for an ultimate and greater reward.
Unfortunately, as Vishal points out, there will always be spammers. We may never get rid of them entirely. But as long as responsible Internet users continue to speak up against them, these nuisances may at least be kept in check.

I too, have noticed that a great many people who have posted here seem to be after only one thing - getting people to go back to their site or buy their product or something.
I have learned an enormous amount of information on a variety of subjects in this forum as well, and I greatly appreciate the patience of many of the veteran posters here for that.
Advice asked for, as I have said before, should be freely given. No strings, no catches, no 'come to my site and I'll help you' comments. So for whatever it's worth, I'm thanking the majority of you guys and gals who have provided support AND advice... with no catches...

I agree...but here's the cool part, if you notice a spammer who comes through and posts things left and write and includes a bunch of links, you can email the site administrator and he'll remove the posts by the spammer. I know, because I've emailed him on at least two occasions, and before you know it "BAM", the spam was gone!

Yeah, but I'd be willing to bet you that the site administrator has a lot better things to do than constantly go through all the topic lists and threads to look for spammers.
Sometimes, it's difficult not to become annoyed by those particular kinds of posts, not only here, but in other forums too, some of which are designed purely for information and support - there are other forums available where people can post their own opportunities as well. Asking about those opportunities is one thing - telling people to click onto your site for more than free information or website design examples is just not polite. It's self-serving.

Due to the very nature of Internet, it's impossible to prevent people from posting spam due to different time zones people come from. Of course, I have the option to pre-moderate the forum so none of the posts appear unless I approve, but that defeats the main purpose of forums - instant interactivity. So my suggestion is just to ignore them. They will be deleted for sure.

Also, its not properly guided before to the marketers or promoters to get traffic in good manner, as everybody knows and giving advice for traffic resources, forum signature is one of the best resources for getting traffic, they have to use that in proper manner, involving in threads and giving their knowledge about that...
If ur posts interests automatically the reador visits ur site using the signature to get more info... good marketers knows how to use any kind forums to get good traffic... most of the spammers are entirely new to this internet marketing and mostly they don't know how to use the forums effectively to get traffic... directly trying to promote their products or their websites straight away... but they realizes the results in short time, as it won't worth for long time marketing...

Hey guys,
I never really expected so much conversation from one little post. I was just venting about a pet peeve (spam of any sort) of mine.
It seems that the sentiment is shared by many in this forum, that's the main reason I joined... People here do care about sharing real information with others.
Thanks,
Joe

True, Joe, and netjobs is right. 'Let the reader decide' seems to be the best way to get people to click onto your site.
I realize that there are pros and cons to everything - and are to be expected. I just know that when I want info, I don't want to have to wade through a bunch of self serving posts to find it. On the other hand, most of the time, I am able to correctly recognize which ones are which, so I'll deal with it.
