When creating your home office, you need to make sure that it is comfortable, well lit and convenient. Therefore, it is important that you purchase the furniture and accessories that are most desirable to you. After all, you will be working in the office, so it should be inviting, pleasant and appealing to you.

Some of the items listed below will help you turn your office into a place that is comfortable, attractive and an ideal working place.

Plants One or more plants are great to keep in your office, as they help to clean the air and provide oxygen in your working space. Furthermore, plants and flowers are pleasant to look at and provide you with a sense of serenity.

Good lighting Having proper lighting in your office will help to reduce eyestrain and will make you feel more alert and motivated when working. If it is at all possible, it is a good idea to make your office in a room that has a window, as the best lighting is always natural light. However, even if you have a window there will be times when you will work at night or perhaps early in the morning before dawn. Therefore, having a desk lamp, as well as a bright overhead light can make all of the difference and help you stay focused when working.

Comfortable seating Make sure the office chair you select is supportive and is comfortable to sit in. The best type of chair to purchase is one that is ergonomic, and adjustable.

Pictures Whether it is pictures of your family, pets or beautiful landscapes and scenery, etc., pictures add atmosphere to the walls of your room, and are always pleasant and welcoming to look at.

Color Did you know that color has an effect on your mood? For this reason, the color of your office matters. Light, cheerful colors, particularly light blue, are calming and make your office space an ideal place to work. Painting or pasting wallpaper that is dark or full of wild designs can make you feel overwhelmed, depressed, stressed or distracted.

Music Having a stereo, mini radio or sound system on your computer may also be something you will find, calming and pleasant. While some people work better in complete silence, others find silence to be uncomfortable and would prefer to have low, easy listening music on as background noise.

Aside from the above mentioned suggestions, you should also keep in mind that where you place your furniture in your office is important. The reason is because if you dont position your furniture in an orderly manner, you may not have convenient access to the equipment you need. For instance, if you have a phone in your office, you should keep it on or near your desk so you can reach it easily without having to get up and interrupt you work.

An ideal home office environment is one that you feel relaxed and content in. The object is to make your working area one that is free of distractions but is organized and peaceful.

Any other tips?

Yes.. If I may give the stay at home moms help out there some advice. We have lot going on with a bunch of lit' ones. Esp. babies. So you're on the phones baby's crying or the kids are

Then after you make sure they are settled in before you start sponsoring you have to

So make sure you have a PLANNER!! Let everyone in your house know that from 8am-11am is business time. Well, I try anyway. It does me no good with my 6mth old.

Another help tip is to have a headset for your home phone. If you have a business when you make alot of calls or appts. than you should definitely get one. Having a cordless phone is not enough.
It helps to have your hands free to multi-task.

If you have dail-up and it takes out your home line, then you need another line and a filter. I was lucky because we already have 4 lines for Rush Office. But most people don't so you should also consider that. Or upgrade to DSL or digital is best.

Another tip. If your work involves being on the computer a lot, consider purchasing a laptop. Last I looked, you could get them from Dell for $600 or so. This, combined with a wireless internet connection, will allow you the freedom to move around the house and work. I know it's quite helpful for me to be able to work downstairs with my three year old when my wife is out of the house.

That said, you'll almost certainly have times where concentration is required, and an office is critical, but I find being able to relocate helps greatly when I'm in charge of the kid.

Cheers,
Gary

I agree with the laptop tip. I also like having a separate room as an office because sometimes, without a separate work space, it's easy to get no work done at all if you know what I mean. When I walk into my home office it reminds me that I'm at work and I seem to get more done. I guess that's one of the disciplines of being a successful work from home business!

Good tip Gary. There are few cautions though before you make a transition...

One thing you should be aware is that laptops are laptops and desktops are desktops. Performance wise, desktops are far better than laptops. I recently traded my desktop for a laptop (with almost similar configuration) and I must say, laptop lags far behind in performance. If you use bulky software and applications that require large amount of memory, think again.

-----Side Bar-----
One very inexpensive way to speed up the performance of your laptop is to increase the RAM.
-----Side Bar-----

Also, if your work involves lot of typing, laptops can be very unappealing. Make sure there are sufficient ports on your laptop to attach extra keyboard/mouse.

However, one big advantage of having a laptop is that you can travel frequently, which can be very good for your psyche. Working in the same place without much social interactions can be very depressing.

Here's a good guide on buying a laptop.
