Hello everybody. I just found this site today and it looks great! I am looking to find a secure work at home job which will make me enough money to pay my bills. If anyone here has some advice on where to find such jobs, I would be grateful. This is my first attempt to work from home and I'm afraid of getting scammed.

Hi Lindag,
You might want to take a look at Guru.com. They have many openings in lots of different areas. You do have to pay for bids on jobs at certain levels of participation, but there is a wide variety and many catagories to choose from. Guru offers help setting up profiles and resumes, as well as attachments of your past work. They do have a basic level of participation that is free, but you have more opportunities to choose from if you sign up for a subscription. I have used this service personally and have found that it pays for itself. I made a big effort to bid on as many jobs as I thought I could do every day, which gave me plenty of opportunity to get myself and my work out there.
Getting that first job offer can be tough! Build yourself a resume that is short, sweet, and to the point. If you decided you want to bid for, for instance, data entry jobs, create an example of your data entry work that you can send to prospective employers. In my case, I used educational writing I had done previously to prove that I could do technical writing.
Next, I decided how to word my bid so that I was using Guru's minimum bid for my project bid frequently. That doesn't mean that you have to rip yourself off! It only means that if project details are vague, you can bid $10 for 2.5 hours and come up with the minimum bid for an estimate, offering to work more hours than that if necessary. Also, be willing to negotiate payment on a project, especially if it is your first time working at Guru. That may help employers take a chance on being the first to use your services.
There are other companies on the Internet that use similar type services. Guru is the one I have experience with, however.
Keep looking! I'll bet you find just the right job for you! Keep positive!

Hi lindag
I've been working from home for almost a year with a well respected company. I had been looking to work from home for about 10 years and was about to embark on a career as a Real Estate notary but found I could make the same with this company without traveling all around in my car, spending gas money. I was introduced to this company and after looking into many businesses, immediately realized what this company could do for me immediatley and for my future. I made $1,000 my first month and the rest is history.. I begin everyday working in my pajamas.

Hey Cory
I'm going to look at the site you mentioned. I know you've mentioned Cognigen before and really seemed to like it. Sound like a great deal for someone who's new at the work at home thing and doesn't have lots of money to invest. Thanks!

to be honest, cognigen is just another affiliate type program, and you are completing against 10 million other users. Im highly impress with the flash, have not seen their site, but you can mask a site all you want, I already know the deal behind the deal...overall its still the same old affiliate site.

I came across this company which is offering work at home positions. Thought I would share it with you people. They are seeking individuals to work at home taking inbound phone calls.

Other sites to check out for home-based jobs...

Hey Vishal,

I checked out the pages you suggested, they do look interesting.

I communicated with work at home agent before, and they look good, but they do have some system requirements (home computer, phone) that not everyone can meet.

I'll check the others out in depth when I have time.

Thanks,
Joe

I was applying for a position for the National HealthCare Discount (NHCD) when I learned of this:

Some of homebase telecomm jobs require you to have a (physical) landline. Which may cost you an average of $45.00/mo (Not including Internet & Cable TV). I am surely saving with a Voice-over-IP line without fees, taxes, and misc. charges; with long distance as a constituent entity nationwide. However, homebase telecomm companies fail to convert to newer technology and based on their legacy systems I guess their so tied-up in their architecture.

Vikram, if you are earning something, it's great! Now just find a way to simplify things and duplicate the system over and over. Working at home is no different from your regular job or business. You have to put in considerable amount of effort before you start seeing results. There is nothing like get rich quick program.

Hey Vishal,

Thanks for the website suggestions. I have looked at a couple already and will spend more time this coming weekend looking at some of the others. I am especially interested in the last one you mentioned and find their comments promising.

I am so tired of clicking on sites that ask you to pay a fee before they tell you useful information, so this is a nice change of pace.

Thanks for your efforts on all our behalf!

Here's another membership site offering telecommuting job leads and connections to companies. They charge $59.95 one-time fee.

http://www.teleworkrecruiting.com/

If anyone has tried their service, please post your experiences.

I have worked from home telecommuting for the past five years for a very legit company Alpine Access (www.alpineaccess.com) They only hire in certain areas though but pay by the hour with no start up fees and pay YOU for training as any legit comapny would. On my website I have some info on work from home scams and work from home jobs. [Link removed - Admin] There are pros and cons to work from home jobs versus business opportunities but any legit "job" should not charge any type of fees. Businesses such as direct selling and such are different, they require investment because it is a bussiness opportunity.

There are several directories for telecommuting, which I usually access through About.com -

RE Guru, I have only gotten about half a dozen jobs through them. The problem with sites that require you to bid is that there are certain groups of people who I have noticed on each site; for example eLance and FreelanceWork Exchange, just to name two, where these certain people always seem to undercut the bidding, so unless I really want to take a hit, I can't ever win the gig.

But the key is to keep trying and like most the people on this board suggest, just be cautious whenever you're asked to pay up front. A one-time fee like Vishal mentioned a couple of posts above is fine if they're teaching you a skill which you can always keep, but most of them aren't like that. More's the pity. What to do when you know you can do the work they ask of you, but can't afford the fees, training materials, etc.? It can be a real Catch-22

This is so true, and I agree that it can run into more money going out then coming in. I wanted to make a note for those interrested that workathomeagent.com does allow Voice Over IP, which does save money, and gives you the requirements they want.

Thank you luv2, for mentioning alpine access. I was wondering if they hire in the florida area, and how long is the training. Has anyone worked for Willow CSN.

Try to find the employer and contact them directly. Most legitimate employers do not charge any fee.
