I have a friend who has already written a book on prenatal care of your baby and I have encouraged her to market her material through the internet but I can't seem to find a thorough source anywhere with step by step instructions on how to actually do this.

I'm sure the information is out there without having to buy someones packet for $40.00. No?

Looking for tips Thanks in advance!

 James

Is she wanting to sell it as an ebook or as a hardcopy?

Actually she wants to do both. Starting with the ebook.

She should just keep it as an ebook. Original writings compiled into ebooks can do hundreds of thousands in sales a year with the right marketing plan.

The fact that there is no manufacturing cost greatly increases the profitablity of any product. On top of that, the book could literally make her money for a long long time on the internet and its basically on autopilot.

Okay. Well starting with an ebook, she needs to create a pdf. You can use openoffice.org (free download), but I don't know how confusing it is to actually use.

You may want to try looking for videos on Utube on how to make an ebook.

I've had a couple of hard copy books printed, but I haven't gotten around to converting them yet for online sales. My 'to do' list is getting absurdly long and daunting.

Anyway, see if you can't find something that way. If you still have trouble, let me know. I'll give you a link to temporary access to the SBI members forum. They have pretty good info. there on the subject that might put you on the right course.

She can list at Plimus or Clickbank and get affiliates to sell for her.

 Hey James,

I did a bit more looking and found a great e-book about how to write an e-book.
A lot of the SBIers have used it and have found it to be excellent.
When I get around to doing my own, I'll use it too. Here's a link to the site (non-affiliate) http://www.databasedesign-resource.com/free-ebook.html

It would probably be well worth your friend's money to go ahead and get it and do it right. She'll only have to sell a couple of copies of her book to get her money back.

 Hope that helps.
 Angie

Day-Jobs-Suck dot com is a great source for writing your ebook from start to finish, plus everything else you need to do in order to convert your ebook to pdf and market it. Also there's information on how to write a sales page. Hope that helps.

In a nutshell, sit down and think of all the main points you want to get across, then turn those into headings / sections, and discuss them a bit. Fill in the spaces with your own thoughts, experiences, anecdotes, links to other useful resources on the subject matter, etc.

You can get someone at Elance to do a cover for you. Either that, or there are hundreds of graphic design community websites around with aspiring graphics artists who would kill to make a cover for you, in exchange for a few bucks.

 Good luck!

 Hi happywife,

I checked out his main site:

 http://www.databasedesign-resource.com/

While I don't know this guy, I can see that he is an expert on databases. I know this because I studied that stuff in school myself. I've also done some big database projects involving all of the concepts he covers. Thanx for bringing back some good memories.

I would trust him before I would trust most eBook sellers. Good lead.

He is extremely helpful in there and really seems to know his stuff.

You guys crack me up though. Like I told him, I can't understand even half of what his site is talking about - way over my head!
You guys are in a league of your own.

wow- I know what you mean Angie...and I guess one day we,too, will be able to understand it all...

Awesome paying it forward here and am so glad for all the information available...

For now, it is so much over my head that when I look at it - I get the overwhelming urge to take a nap...which is what I tend to do when I get frustrated and overwhelmed - lol

  I know the feeling.
I've been assured that just because his website niche is out of my realm, his ebook on ebooks is not. What a relief!

 Happywife, Newbie Shield et all,
 Thanks for kind words

My ebook was written not for database people, but for ordinary people just wanting to use their creativity to produce, market, and sell ebooks on the Net. It was actually a by-product: I just wrote down what I used (free SW) and did in order to create ebooks about database technology for my own website, which is, as you correctly have noted, a site for database design professionals.

Sort of having written down 30+ years of knowledge and experience in my field of work. But the ebook happywife mentions is indeed meant to help mere mortals.

 Hey Alf,

Good to see you here. Your ears must have been burning with us talking about you.

Thanks for popping in and reassuring us that the ebook is understandable for those without a lot of expertise. I've read great things about it from others who used it or I wouldn't have recommended it in the first place.

I hope it will be of great benefit to many of the folks on this forum who are interested in writing and marketing ebooks, including me.

 Blessings,
 Angie

 Thanks again Angie, much appreciated.

jadimon (James, the threadstarter) chose a very good/clever title for this thread: .... creating and marketing an ebook...

Creating an ebook isn't really that complicated, once you are given the right (in my case: I found free SW)) tools and guidance/instructions on how to do it. Also, it helps to learn a few (important) tricks about graphics etc.

Here are some important points you should consider for your ebook(s):

 .exe vs. .pdf format:

 http://www.databasedesign-resource.com/support-files/samplechapter2.pdf

 Why size matters:

 http://www.databasedesign-resource.com/support-files/samplechapter.pdf

and so on. (all "links" are dead: No aff.stuff).

What most people fail at though, is getting it to the market!

 That means:

Uploading your pdf to the website
 Joining a sales/payment processor
Setting it all up to run on autopilot
Create a sales page and a download (thank you) page
 What traffic to expect
What to do to get more traffic
Handling affiliates (inviting people to resell for you)
 Important website traffic issues.
 Etc.

So as you can see, a very good thread title

 All the best,

Very important points to consider and very true. It's not much good having an ebook if you can't market it properly.

That's probably partially why I have delayed the whole process. I want to be sure I know what I'm doing.
That, and there just aren't enough hours in the days lately.
I'll get there eventually, though. I know your book is going to be a great help to be sure I do it right.
