I used to somewhat but only in the form of helping out, if you know what I mean... don't spam the chat room, it does NOT work and it only ticks people off.... be of value, add things that people can learn from and you will have fun and hopefully, make money.

I used to be on the forum here hoping against hope that someone would click my links and buy something...
now I have other stuff going on to make money and am on here for the fun of it... (I really don't have time to be on here much but I am hopelessly addicted and some of my bestest kindred spirits (as my dau. would say) are on here - lol)
It's much more fun when you are not trying so hard to make money with forums. lol

I agree with MM. Promoting in chat rooms can be tricky - a slippery slope - and the results aren't usually worth the effort.

 Hi Kay (M5 below),

In the 1990's I used to idle in chat rooms - mostly to play chess online.

Bottom line = I hated it when someone would port their advertisement links over and over. I didn't like it when they would be there in person and talking about their site either.

I doubt that it would be effective and though it's good that you've come up with an idea, I wouldn't bother with it.

I don't think this would be a good idea.

If I learned anything from watching Dateline NBC's to "Catch A Predator" you can generate a lot of traffic in a chat room by telling people you are 13 and curious. (OK this is horrible but I can't resist a joke that would ultimately end with "I'm Chris Hanson")

Seriously. If you are hanging out in chat rooms anyway put a link in your profile and then provide value to the room. If you are interesting, people will view your profile and then visit your site.

I tried but it's not effective. So I guess it just a waste of time.
