I got a $30 credit for AdWords from my site host.
When I created the ad for my work at home site, Google advised me that the category was saturated (obviously) and I would probably lose money on the endevour of advertising it.
Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone out there has had any success with paid advertising in 'work at home' related keyword Sm�rg�sbord.

I'd suggest staying away from Adwords when starting out, particularely for "work at home" type keywords. I suppose if you have a $30 credit from Google, you could run a campaign for a little while just to test the waters, but keep a close eye on things so that you don't exceed the credit amount (unless, of course, you are making money!).

Hi Philip,
PPC comes later. Don't use it at all until you really know what you are doing. Why throw away money?
I suggest freezing your PPC campaign until you are confident about using it.

Thanks for the advice NS.
I did a bit of research on ppc and still probably don't have a real firm understanding of all aspects.
Anyway, my chance to use the credit expires after 15 days and so I modified and started up the campaign again.
Maybe you can help me understand the stats and if they are good.
I don't sell anything on my site, so I decided to market to India and make the credit go as far as it could. Data entry is big over there anyway.
Wow, I think the AdWords site is down at the moment. Hmmmm.
Well, I tell you the stats later I guess.

Hi Philip,
It won't help you much to get quick fixes here and there for PPC.
You really have to read quite a bit before you tinker with it otherwise I would simply answer your questions.
I can tell you a couple things to satisfy your curiosity but you should study enough to master the concepts - including stats interpretation - before you move forward again.
You should be getting 0.5% conversion rate at minimum. Whatever your conversion rate is, it should generally be at least a break even in regards to expense verses income.
Pay attention to what works and how to tweak what doesn't work. You need to learn quickly as you go. So, figure out a way to track your results. Don't just throw mud at the wall.
Plan before you jump in. A word processor document for planning and a spreadsheet for tracking results. Have them both complete and ready beforehand.
I'll say it again, don't go into it until you are well educated in PPC or you'll lose money without knowing why or how to do better on your next campaign.
PPC comes later - after you've been making money from organic traffic.

Thanks for the reply NS. AdWords is still down, but I'll check on the conversion rate when it comes up.
One more question on the subject. Do your ad impressions benefit your site at all?

Hi Philip,
Yes.
In regards to Adwords: More impressions means more exposure. More exposure means more chances at clickthrough, which means more chances at driving traffic to your site.
If you are getting a 0.5% or higher clickthrough rate, your PPC copy is at least adequate. If you're getting less, Google will likely raise your cost. To keep cost per click low, you need a high relevancy score plus good copy to create a good clickthrough rate.
In regards to Adsense: You also want a high number of impressions. The more impressions you get the more visitors are viewing your Adsense pages.
The more they view them, the higher the chance is that they will click on them and you'll get paid more.
Furthermore, the more impressions you get on your pages, the easier it is to attract sponsors and charge higher rates (actually, you wouldn't quote Adsense results per se. The preferred verbiage in this case is "Page Views" and/or "Unique Visitors" but high traffic - regardless of how you measure and describe it - is what you want to profess).
It would be in your best interest to read everything you can get your hands on to understand how to run a PPC campaign. A solid education will serve you best whereas spurts of PPC Q&A will be more likely to cost you than to help you.

Newbie nailed it right on in his last post! When I first started affiliate marketing I tried to use PPC campaigns but found it very difficult to understand and master. I would also advise to use PPC lastly. Use the million other ways there are to drive traffic to your site and worry about PPC at a later time when you have really spent the time to study and understand how to master it.
There are many of programs and reading material that tell you how to use such sites as Google Adwords. Watching video tutorials, I have found with my private coach is far more explanatory and hands on rather than just reading something and trying to interpret it and apply it. Many people out there will tell you how to do things but NOT SHOW you how to do it.
