 I've posted this list before:

 SEO for organic
 articles
 press release
message boards with a sig link
 free classifieds
comments on other's blogs with link
 Yahoo directory - $300/year
 Dmoz directory
multiple websites of your own - linking back to the target website
your blog links back to your website
 Search engine registration
ask for a review from a high traffic blog owner ($100-$500)
figure out ways to get a linkback from a higher PR site

 That should get you started.

I can agree with that 100%. I always suggest writing articles that are helpful to the type of audience that you are trying to reach. I also strongly suggest search engine registration as well.

Articles are very good and produce a target audience for you. Probably the best article sites can be found by doing a search in google for article sites.

I would post articles to 4 or 5 different article sites and then review your website traffic and see where the clicks came from.

 Thanks

Can anyone provide a lead to free classifieds. Several sites would not allow MLM, affiliate, etc. and rejected. Even a home work classified rejected. I succeeded in getting 2 ads placed (usfreeads.com), but wonder if there are any others you can recommend that would take GPT advertising.

I think that posting helpful, thoughtful comments on high PR blogs is effective. You might not get direct link juice, since most have "no follow". However, a certain percentage do have "do follow" and if you post at enough blogs, then you are bound to hit some of these eventually.

In any case it's worth it, because people will click to your blog, and blog owners who like what you write may end up linking to your blog. Also, commenting is a great way to generate, formulate and hone ideas that you can then post on your own blog. (It's worth doing for that alone, I think.)

Content, popularity and links are 3 factors that will get you a good ammount of traffic. There are so many directories that you can submit to as previously mentioned. The good thing about directories is that you can get a decent ammount of targeted hits by placing your link in one of the catagories relevent to your site.

Personally I make videos (like ones on YouTube). Because I believe more in Attraction Marketing, then I will try to add value and useful information in my videos. i always give out my website link but never push it. So the idea is to make videos relevent to your business w/o advertising it. Videos are free to do as long as you have a camera.

Quoting: wannaliveright go to Blogger.com to get a free account. When you update your Blog you must Ping it also to get it to the search engines and out to the web faster. I use Wordpress. Could you please explain a bit more how I can Ping it from there? How do you compare Blogger with Wordpress? Thanks.

i personally love article marketing. I have articles I wrote several months back still generating traffic for me daily. It is very easy to do and anyone can typically get a half decent article out once a day. Even if you do 2 a week in a years time you're looking at over 100 articles...

Hey Newbie, When are you going to put that list on a website...or better yet make a lens about it

I second articles and press releases. Excellent way to get traffic! My home business has video tutorials showing step by step how to market and where to market. Once I learned some tricks of article marketing, I landed on the front page of google in the number 1,2, &5 spot within 24 hrs using specific keywords. I write articles consistently and I couldn't stop the traffic if I wanted to. Best part about writing articles and press releases, they're FREE!

In the beginning, I was not very excited to write articles..
 One day, I just started!
My first article was accepted and I had found it published on other websites..I have a good amount of traffic from this.
Yes, writing one a day even would really add up, and hopefully generate sales for a long time to come.
 Victoria

I use article marketing exclusively. You never have to worry about a Google "slap."

 BillyPilgrim: use article marketing exclusively
Billy, that seems to me an extraordinary achievement!
 Congratulations.

Do you use software that produces 100s of articles for you on chosen topics? Or are you doing this longhand?

 And

What are the keys for ensuring your articles are picked up by search engines and folks needing your articles for their ezines?

 Appreciate the insight.

It's not worth the effort of submitting to 500 article directories.
Go with just 5-10 biggest directories and you're good.
If you only want to submit to 1, go with Ezinearticles.com.

With properly researched keywords, good article, headline, and resource box, I get over 50 uniques per month per article from Ezinearticles alone.

Generally how long does it take for your article to get some real exposure assuming you take all the necessary steps?

It's hard to say. I guess it depends on what you consider real exposure. I've had a popular blog pick up my article and gotten a flood of traffic from it (I define flood as 2000 uniques in a week) a few days after I posted it.

For the majority of them, they are just normal. The thing is, normal depends on both your niche and your personal writing style, so I can't say how many visitors YOU would average in a given niche.

But, it doesn't matter at all what your average response to your articles is (as long as you get SOME traffic from it). Once you've got a baseline, it's easy to just look at things as numbers:

If you get 5 uniques per week per article, and you know you make $50 per 1000 uniques. From there you know you'll need to put out 1000 articles to make $50 per week.

Don't let the numbers above scare you, those are ridiculously low unless you're just a horrible writer. Like I said, I generally 3X that in traffic and more than that in money per M.

What I'm saying is that you have to start a campaign before you can track it. Once you have your baseline numbers as high as you can get them (by improving your writing or your conversion rate on your website), then you've got a map laid out in front of you.

This makes things much simpler - you can say I make X per week per article, I want to make Y per week. then you know you just need to write y/x articles to get to your income goal.

The really good thing about article marketing is that it's long-term traffic. Articles you write today will still be bringing you traffic in 3 years (not as much, there's a shelf-life). As long as you make it a priority to be consistent with your article marketing I would venture to say it's actually impossible not to make pretty good money, and pretty probable that you'll make great money.

I write alot of articles and press releases. When I submit them, I usually do that to a handful of sites, maybe 8-10 and that's it. Once I submit an article and it goes live, my article make it to the front page of google within 24 hrs and stays there. There's a few things you have to do to get it there, but once I was taught this in my current business, I started implementing this technique and couldn't believe it. It's a GREAT way to drive traffic and it's FREE!

Thanks for all the help on this topic.

Can you also explain in a little detail what a press release is exactly and how you use it to build exposure to your businesses. Thanks again.

Bill.....Press releases are used to announce something, whether it be you joining forces with xyz company, or the launch of a new company you're involved with, etc. In press releases you can put your links in the body a few times. With articles you can not do this. You can google any business and find several press releases, look them over, see how they're written. Here are a few sites I use to write press releases.....
 free-press-release.com
 i-newswire.com
 prweb.com

 Hope that helps!
