People say long tail keywords are important to target in PPC campaigns, because not only are they targeted but also they cost a lot less to bid on.

But when I searched for certain long tail key phrases, the adwords keyword tool said: Very Low Search Volume. Now what's very low search volume, is there a rough figure for this, like 100 searches per day? Or maybe, it's less.

Now if that's the case, how can we bid on this key phrase, when its search volume is very low, nobody is searching for it. And if we don't get clicks (because nobody's looking for this), wouldn't google penalize us?

Pl let me know if very low search volume is alright, or must we avoid such keywords altogether?

Additionally, there is less competition and people tend to search using phrases (long tails) rather than a single word.

If you are using long tails for PPC, find some that have less than average competition and an average or higher search volume. You can dip a little below ave SV if you want. You may need to do that.

There is no "rough figure" regarding "low search volume". It's all relative to how micro the niche is. In addition to using the math or meters, try instincts, common sense, and the big picture. In some niches ALL of the search volume will be low yet worth tapping. Understand?

Don't write something off just because it has a low search volume. You have an advantage over computers in that you can use your intuition and consider things outside of number crunching. Calculate like Spock but infer like Kirk.

For adsense, you want the opposite - high competition phrases and single keywords so that you will be paid more per click. Still, it doesn't always happen that way as HappyWife has pointed out. That's why you have to tweak around with things regardless of what you think at first when you implement.

Never stay stuck on a method unless it is working well. Pay attention to the results.

I've tried many times, but it's always the same result. Long tail=Very Less competition but very low search volume as well. Virtually impossible to find avg. search volume for less competitive words.

I understand the logic behind this. My only concern is, whether google will penalize me, if my keyword doesn't get many searches, and therefore less number of clicks.

Just curious. Have you used or know about tools like keyword elite or adwords analyzer/clickad equalizer? These tools supposedly give data based on less competitive/more searches keywords.

its will depend on what you are promoting. if its something expensive then having afew click will do it. what l would do would type in google and search like they do, using different phrase. the idea is writing something an info, tips whatever using this long tail keywords ,not forgetting the main keyword. you have to remember not everyone speaks english and they will search in the way they feel correct
