Does it matter if a website address ends in .org, .net etc? I know .com is very popular. The domain i wanted to register was already taken so i chose the .net instead.

.com is the most recognized and most popular as you mentioned. People tend to automatically 'think' .com at the end of a site name, but in the grand scheme of things, if you build a good quality site, .net is fine.
I know a lot of people that have .net that do very well, so don't let it worry you.

Get a .net if you can't get a .com, and get a .org if you can't get a .net

If you are going to spend a lot of money advertising , get a .com , you will lose some traffic for a .net

.com commercial business domain .net commercial network .org nonprofit organizations .edu educational institution .gov government agency .mil military .biz small business .info informational site Additional domain name extentions include : biz, bz, info, tv, name, etc. Currently, most domain registrars offer cheap domain registration of .biz and .info domains.
If your website or business caters to the local community, such as a pizza delivery business or recruitment agency or the like, then it makes sense to get a country-specific domain. You actually benefit from having such a local domain because the people in your country know that they're dealing with a local entity, which is what they want. After all, if they stay in (say) the United Kingdom, they're not likely to want to try to order pizza from pizzaparlour.com, which suggests a US or an international site. You'll have better luck calling it pizzaparlour.co.uk, ie, with a UK domain.
Otherwise its recommended to use the ".com" extensions or there is a great chance of visitors ending up at the competitors site.
