I am lucky as I have 2 web servers and can host my own, as well as other peoples websites. So my favorite host would have to be myself.
The advantage to this for me is I have full SSH access to the back end of the server so I know which updates are done and which are not, I have full access to the server logs, firewall, and can run/install programs which need SSH access.
As well server loads are low (0.17, 0.22, 0.18) and sites load fast (including a forum I have with over 1100 members and 100,000 posts) and uptime is excellent with the server being up 167 Days, 1 Hours and 15 Minutes since the last major update.
Another advantage for me, as I will/do host other peoples websites, I can host my own sites for free practically.

Nowadays, most folks go with either HostGator, BlueHost, HostMonster, or GoDaddy.
There may be other decent hosting services out there, but for most, it would be best to choose from the above list.
For multiple domains, I suggest a multiple domain account since it's only a few bucks more per month. For masking (most won't need this), I suggest GoDaddy.
Keep in mind that if your site ever truly takes off, you'll need to upgrade to a dedicated server, which goes for $150 plus. You'll need it for security, load, and speed.

For free webhosting you can't go wrong with Byethost. NO ads and more than you'd need to start out. I have 2 sites running with them. Paid hosting... I have been very happy with 1&1. A lot of bang for the buck, no up-time problems. If you need direction on creating your site go to computertactics.com. Lots of free tools/advice.

Hi There
I use Dreamhost & so far they seem fine. They tend to have pre programmed responses to any enquiries though ! But I would recommend them to anyone & a lot of the top marketing folk seem to use them, so that's good enough for me.
Cheers

Hey guys
I have to put my oar in here
I use Godaddy at present and have no problems with them. You can upload your own ftp and HTML but you can also use their blockbuilder if you do not have that knowledge. You can change the look and feel of your site too which I like.
Now, having said this about Godaddy, I have in the past used Sitesell. I am about to go back to Sitesell in the next few weeks as I think the suite of tools you get is second to none. All you have to worry about really is getting content written. All of the 'back office' stuff is taken care of for you.
Here's a little fact; For every hour you spend building your online business, non-SBI owners spend an additional 9 hours fighting technology, doing tedious chores, and futilely trying to figure out Search Engines.
I know who I'd rather be with
Just my 2c
Sarah. xx

I have been using Revolutionary Matrix. it has been a God Sent, and also they are so supportive there. They help you and even have Regular Live Webinars to help you understand the C-Panel. and even have a staff to make Professional designs if you don't know what your doing.

I also switched to Just Host a couple of months ago. Cheap, 24 hr customer service, unlimited space & bandwidth.
My old host was GoDaddy but was forced to make the switch because I was trying to run vTiger CRM and it needs php-imap turned on to handle bounces. On godaddy shared servers that is not going to happen.

I changed my web host to Hostgator since 2 months ago and so far have tested their support, knowledge and site recovery expertise. They passed with flying colors. It's the best decision I've made to change my web host.

I use Hostgator for my main blog. The support has been quick and helpful and I can add multiple domains under one account. I have never experienced any downtime or problems with them.
For free hosting, 110mb.com is the winner hands down. No ads and popups and the servers are pretty fast. They don't use Cpanel but their admin panel is very easy to use.

I was surprised to not see 1and1.com (US) option listed on the vote. I've used them for years and been very happy with their price and their customer service! They get my vote! Diane

Will a hosting plan offering unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth be sufficient for a forum like this?

realityshifter: Will a hosting plan offering unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth be sufficient for a forum like this? Plans that offer unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth pool the resources among all those hosted on the same server. So if there are couple of heavy users in your server, the speed of all the people in the same server will affected. It's much like unlimited broadband plans.

Pursuing that point further, will you describe the Work at Home Forum as a heavy user? Are you on an unlimited disk and bandwidth hosting plan since the beginning? If not, what has been your disk space and bandwidth requirements, if you're free to share that info?

If not, what has been your disk space and bandwidth requirements, if you're free to share that info? I'm on a shared server with fixed bandwidth plan (80 GB/month) and it appears to be sufficient. However, even though bandwidth is fixed, in shared servers, the server resources (RAM) will be shared and it'll still affect you if there are heavy users in your server. The difference however is that when resources are fixed, they usually have a fixed quota of plans on a particular server unlike unlimited plans.
The best option however would be dedicated servers. Then there are also Virtual Private Servers, which are like a cross between dedicated and shared plans.
So it can be summed up like this - worst to best:
unlimited plans < fixed resources < virtual private servers < dedicated servers

I like Hostgator. They have fantastic support. Hostmonster is a close second, and half the price.

I know everyone knows and trusts hostgator, godaddy, and a few others mentioned, but what about justhost? Has anyone had any luck with them recently? Please respond soon because I have to make a decision within a couple of days. Thanks!

I use webhostingpad and actually really like them. I've never have problems. Inexpensive and reliable. I buy domains from godaddy but missed a lot of emails from them so that is all the business they will get from me. Don't like them filtering my email for me and no it was not my settings. I also like HostGator.

Here is another thing. You know it is not that hard to create your own hosting company with a reseller account, and it is not that expensive.
The backend and billing is usually handled by the hosting company that you have your reseller account with, and they also take care of tech problems.
