Hi DesRae,

Since you are motivated and not afraid of work, you can definitely start an online business! Those are the two biggest prerequisites.

Your starting place is going to be reading and learning so that you choose a business building plan that will suit you and your long term goals.

When I started out, I ran across a free affiliate marketing course ebook that really helped to educate me and get me going in the right direction. I always recommend it to everyone seriously interested in getting started in an online business.

Once you've got a general idea of what you want to do, then you can ask specific questions about what to do next, etc.

I highly suggest you don't try to promote "work at home" or "make money online" products as your way of starting an online business. I know there is a lot of demand for that, but until you have a good understanding and some measure of success at it yourself, it's a poor choice.

I see too many people who jump on the work from home bandwagon only to fall off the wagon a bit battered and bruised and very discouraged and disillusioned.

There are an unlimited number of topics you could build a business around. It's a good idea to think about something you and/or your husband already know about or are interested in. You'll enjoy the business building process a whole lot more and will have a much higher chance of success.

That's my opinion and observation, anyway.
Let me know if I can help you out along the way. It's always a pleasure to help others get started on the right path.

Blessings,
Angie

Congrat DesRae for deciding to take action. That is always a hang up for many.

Affiliate marketing is always a good place to start because once you get the hang of that then your opporutunities are limitless.

Take Angie's advice and try to start something that you are interested in. If you don't believe yourself what you are talking about then you will have a hard time.

Hi DesRae,

One good system that many of the people here on the forum use is My Online Income Sytem. If you google this you will get the link for it.

It wont provide you with instant riches, but if you follow the plan you should make good money long term.

Hi,

You can either think of affiliate marketing where you are promoting someone else's product for a commission or think of start your own online service.

Just think of what you like doing, what kind of skills you have and offer those services on a freelance basis. There are a lot of companies who look for virtual assistants online for various tasks. Just google for freelance jobs and this will give you an idea of what kind of home business you can start.

DesRae,

I hope you are excited! This could be the beginning of a really good thing. And I hope you're not doing this just because your husband wants you to...

The main piece of advice I would give is keep coming back here for everyone else's advice. Just make sure you read a few comments at a time as there may be the odd single comment with vested interests! (that's in general - I'm not referring to this thread!)

Another piece of advice I'll put on the table is that you should seriously limit the amount of cash you spend (personally, I set myself a limit of $100). But you can implement an affiliate marketing business at no cost.

Having your own domain name ($10/year) can be advantageous... and there are legitimate products available on the internet which will guide you through a process from which you get a solid foundation in affiliate marketing. My Online Income System (mentioned above) is an example of such a product.

There are some products that require a monthly subscription fee - if you've got the time on your hands then this could be worth it. Personally, I preferred to pay a one-off fee rather than feel pressured into justifying a monthly $30 expenditure (but I was short of time!).

It's also worth bearing in mind that an affiliate marketing product is basically a compilation of information you could find on the internet. Without such a product, you would have to know what you're looking for, where to find it, and how to use it, and you would also need the time to do all that.

Whilst doing your own research would take (a lot?) longer, it is arguably a better learning experience as you're learning it for yourself and not being spoon-fed. You're fully understanding the reasons why you need to know the stuff.

Whatever you do, this forum is a great place to find out the info you will need.

Good luck with your online business!

Hi,

I agree with jon squirrel, there really is no need to spend large sums of money when you are getting started.

Look for all the free resources available on the net for your marketing etc.

You can always try stuff like pay per click advertising once you have made a good profit from other sources.

Hey DesRae!

I'm so glad that you're putting yourself in the forefront to make some money online from BUILDING a business. Working from home is a great opportunity. The reason why I say opportunity is because you have to understand that making money takes TIME and MORE time.

When you first start you cannot think about the money first, but rather, BUILDING THE BUSINESS. That's the most important. When you build something, for instance, and it has a firm foundation, it has a very slim chance that it will fall or even topple over. So, think about BUILDING your business first.

There's an opportunity that I have been working with for a while now and I've mad some good money with it. There is no *get rich* way to make money because it takes time, understanding, and building. There is much reading that must go into building any online business and that requires time before you even BEGIN the business. Check out my signature. Its an amazing opportunity and it doesn't even cost too much to start.

Keep in mind that any online business must be built before substantial and ever-increasing money can be made. Oh, one more thing>>many of the members on this forum have great opportunities hidden in their signatures. Frankly, that is how I began making some extra money online for working just a couple minutes a day.

I hope you've gotten something out of this...good luck to you and your husband!

I have a question, why does he want YOU to start an online business? The reason that I ask that is because usually when an outside person/force is prompting us to do something, as soon as things get tough we bail. Or if things don't work out we may resent them.

So I would suggest first answering that question. After that if you come to the conclusion that you want to do it for yourself, then decide what TYPE of online business you want to do.

You have so many from selling physical products, ebay marketing, affiliate marketing, network marketing, direct sales, etc.

Whatever business you decide to do it SHOULD provide you with ongoing marketing training. B/C to be honest if you don't know how to drive traffic to your website or whatever, you won't be in business long.

What I would suggest is try and host a business. Just to start with start a fun website or a personal website. Or if you have the confidence start a business website itself.
Try to learn the basics and pick up the spirit. Once you have basics on, no one can stop you.
All the best !

First things First....

The first thing all businesses need are a plan and a mentor.

the BIG plan will include your business idea, and how much $ you see yourself making in a certain amount of time.

Your near-sighted plan is going to be a daily journal of tasks. Start simple like this:

April 20, 2009
Start Time: 10 am
Finish: 11:30 am

Search for good products to sell online
record products, websites, compare prices.
Find at least 4 good products

AT 11:30 STOP! review your session for a few moments, and then take a break! You've only worked 1.5 hrs. but they were more focused cause you had an itinerary.

Now for your mentor.
this is one of the most under-rated topics of starting a business because everyone wants to work ALONE and not have the feeling of a boss. Well, a mentor is just someone to guide and steer you into their direction, which is usually a successful one or else they wouldn't be your mentor.
Some good examples of Work From Home Mentors are Frank Kern and Eben Pagan. These guys make great videos and their stuff works.

I know these two ideas sound simple and ineffective, but trust me, all the Big Dogs out there use them everyday. They never start working without an Agenda and EVERY successful Big Dog has a mentor.

Hope this helps you unleash your power and run free with your successful business

I don't agree with a lot of what is said here - but I
understand where folks are coming from.

If you want to come at online marketing with an
employee mentality - as if it's a job you want to make
a little money with you can do that.

Personally I feel building a business is way too much
work unless your intention is to create wealth - and
an employee mentality will work against you there.

-Paid surveys, etc... are all "jobs" - not businesses

I've always built my businesses around positioning the
business for genuine competitive advantage. You don't
get that unless you put money into it.

You CAN start marketing online with no experience and
almost no capital but your profits will probably be
painfully slow in coming.

Just my experience. I've been around doing this stuff
for awhile.

I 100% agree with this. However you always have to find what is good for you.

I would like to say don't limit yourself on what type of business you get in b/c of the cost.

A lot of people make the mistake getting in a biz that cost $10 per se but get frustrated when they see how long it takes to start making $10k/mo.

Always always do your research and way your options. I go back to what i said in my 1st post, find out your why and that will help you find out your what, when, how, and where.

DesRae

I also agree with what has been said previously. I was in the same position a few months ago.

As long as you are motivated and put the work in you will be successful - you just have to find the right business that you truly believe in.

Good Luck
