For most of the search engines today, number of back links is important

The way that I understand it is that PageRank is just 1 of the things that Google uses to determine which pages to show when you do a search in the Google search engine.

PageRank when used in a search is based on the what the person entered into the search box. So depending on the keywords that your site has, a site may do well with one set of keywords and do terrible with another set of keywords.

As others have said, it doesn't generate traffic, but may be used during the search for the keywords on your site.
