When I go to google and type link:www.mysite.com google finds a few sites linking to me. But with other tools I find hundreds of sites linking to me.
Does anyone know, how does Google decide which sites to find that are linking to you? And does this effect page rank?
Ie, are there only certain types of links that are important in Google's eyes, and are those the ones that show up on the link:www.mysite.com searches?
Thanks, if anyone knows anything about this.

I think links from classifieds, forums, etc are discounted

Well it does show forum backlinks ... not directory backlinks though.
But when I did a submission to 250 directories, one of my blogs went from not being indexed at all on its keyword, to #3 on Google. So it does do something ...

It actually shows directory and forum links, there's no rule about that. My advice is: forget about checking your backlinks in Google or anywhere else, just keep on building them.

Google gives credit for much fewer links than Yahoo. I don't know what the criteria is. I DO know its a level playing field.
If you want links just put them everywhere you go. Its a bit of a crude approach but it works. Don't put links on "bad neighborhood" sites like porn and stuff that looks like B.S.
Goolgle rewards good information producers. EzineArticles is good for Google backlinks.

Google has been cracking down on directories recently
