Honestly, I wouldn't spend any money to get listed in the search engines - you can get listed for free on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Some of the smaller search engines charge fees, but it is not worth it.
You can get into pay per click advertising on Google, Yahoo, and MSN, but I would not recommened doing so without a good turorial, particularely for Adwords - because you can easily lose lots of money if you do not know what you are doing.
