How to talk your boss into letting you work from home

I am a freelance writer and am trying to research the subject of how someone can convince their company to let them telecommute. I once had the opportunity to do that myself but left the company instead. In some cases people may think they need a different job when they really just need a change of venue. Like me, they just don't know how to approach the subject with their boss. I wish I belonged to this forum at that time; maybe I would have gotten some ideas. Has anyone been successful in doing this and care to share your advice?
