Hello everyone! I'm new here, but have been lurking in the background. I decided to take the plunge and join up with the rest of you. I'm sort of thinking that I might want to start a business with a health related company. I've already looked into Herbalife, but I know some people here in Erie who already tried selling it and were not able to obtain sales. I always thought the product was excellent, but a bit steep in price. I've also been looking into Juice Plus and Shaklee, but I don't know anyone who has tried selling them before. Has anyone out there had success with any health related companies like this? Erie is a tough market to sell anything, so I would like to be able to offer health related products that are somewhat reasonable. I love promoting things that healthy and good for you as it's my passion!

Anyway... I've been looking through some of the ideas posted out here and think that there must be some opportunity for me somewhere. I'm definitely a people person and really enjoy getting out, meeting people and making new friends, so I think I might good in doing some sort of sales.

Have a great day!
Jenny

P.S. Does anyone know how to post a picture on their profle?

Welcome Jenny! I don't remember all the details of posting your picture on your profile but I DO remember that I had to get Vishal to help me , so if you can't figure it out, I am sure he will help you out.

He is the forum manager and we all like him a lot around here.

I've heard positive things about Shaklee, and they have been around for awhile.

Yes, selling or being just a distributor can be a challenge but we are always buying or selling, it is the nature of commerce and interaction amongst people.

There is a viable established alternative business out there that don't deal with selling, and yet still make you substantial money. So don't feel like you have to just be a distributor-seller to succeed with a home business.

Jenny,

Welcome to the forum.

If you have or you know someone that has inflammation sonoran bloom from Trivita would be a good health and wellness company. You are able to try this product for f.r.e.e before you make a decision or if someone purchases it and it does not do what they feel it should they can get a 100% refund. The company totally stands behind the product and it is a company focused more on the customers than the distributors.

Hi Jenny,
Did you check out Melaleuca. We have been using the products for 4 years, and we have had great success. We got into the products because we had a serious set of symptoms with our daughter. Two doctors told us after a 2 year battle to try these products because they are very good and it would be good if everybody would detoxify their homes. All 400 products are toxin free.

I think everywhere is a tough sell right now, but I am having some success here in Minnesota. If you want any info you can e-mail me.

Thanks everyone! I am definitely checking out each of the products recommended here.

I am serious about creating a second income from home, but I feel my niche will likely be with health related products. Please feel free to contact me. The Melaleuca looks good!!

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to the forum. Having a business around the health industry is a good option. People are always going to be dealing with health issues, so there will ALWAYS be a market.

Here are a few questions I'd like you to consider:

1) Do you prefer to do most of your sales/marketing online or offline?

You can do both, of course, but different people will be more effective with different methods. I 'market' the health products I promote a little bit offline, but I do most of my marketing online with my health related site allaboutparasites.com.

For me, I lean more towards online because I have other responsibilities (ministry stuff) offline that is my main focus. Also, when you get yourself established properly online, you have a much greater opportunity because the whole country/world is your market and your site is working for you 24/7.

2) Do you have a certain area of health that is of particular interest to you? Maybe something you've dealt with yourself personally or with a family member? It could be a particular ailment or health concept.

If you decide to market online, you will do much better to narrow your focus to a particular aspect of health. For instance, my parasite website is more focused on digestive health issues, although it's not as laser-focused as it should be.

However, I get several hundred visitors per day (and growing) to that site because I've built it around a narrower health niche.

3) Do you want to be part of a network marketing company where you are actively purchasing and using the products yourself, or do you just want to recommend products to others and earn a commission?

This makes a difference in the company and products you choose to promote. If you will not be an active user of these health related products, it's not really practical to join a network marketing company.

As a distributor in a network marketing company, you WILL be required to purchase a certain amount of product in order to get your commissions earned each month. There's nothing wrong with that model as long as it suits you.

I'm a distributor in 2 network marketing companies, AIM/BarleyLife and Miessence. AIM is more focused on nutritional supplements and Miessence is more focused on certified organic skin care and body care products. I USE the products, so I don't mind the purchase obligation.

On the other hand, I also recommend health care products on my site that are "affiliate" products. I don't have to make any purchases myself, and I earn a commission just by referring sales. This is more suitable to those people who don't want to be purchasing health care products themselves or at least be 'required' to purchase them.

Affiliate marketing is also a very viable business model option for those wanting to get into the health care field and earn money from home, but it's more suited to online sales than offline sales.

I like having a combination of both network marketing (also referred to as MLM or Direct Marketing) as well as affiliate marketing on my site.

Something else that is very important to consider if you decide to join a network marketing company and promote online sales is the specific company's terms, restrictions, etc.

Some companies have very rigid rules about online marketing. There are network marketing companies that won't even allow you to mention their name on your website, etc. Be aware of that. Do your research before you join so that you don't find yourself investing time and money only to discover your chosen business model is not going to be allowed.

I like Melaleuca's products, but last time I checked, they are very strict about their online rules and regulations. As with all of the companies you consider, look before you leap!

Now that I've outlined some basic important considerations, let me give you one final thought to consider...

If you build a health related website (very do-able with SBI), you will be creating a long-term business that will be working for you for years to come round the clock. You'll have to do less and less work to maintain or increase your income flow.

If you market strictly offline, you will be limiting yourself to the hours you are able to physically spend having parties, making personal contacts, and the people in your geographical region.

Offline can be good if you really are a people person and enjoy that side of things, but it can only take you so far. By including an online aspect to your business, the world is your oyster.

I wish you all the best for your exciting new adventure!
Blessings,
Angie

Thanks everyone for your input! Such helpful people here!! Angie, your advice is right on target for me!

Let me update everyone as to my situation...

I have indeed picked a company that seems to suit me well... "Shaklee". They have a tremendous product and have an excellent reputation spanning 50 years. It's funny that you should also mention SBI and Affiliate Marketing Angle, because I have been looking into both as well to compliment my business in health care!

I've been looking for health related products to add to my affiliate network.. any recommendations?

I am having one bit of trouble with Shaklee. One thing I didn't mention in my initial post was that I was a distributor for Shaklee 6 years ago. At the time I was not looking to make it into a business, but to obtain the products for myself and family at a discount. Fast forward to present, and now I'm serious about making this a full time business. The lady that I originally signed up under lives in our area, but she is not into the business aspect either and didn't seem to have a grasp on the marketing strategy. After being in it myself for about a year, I just dropped out. I had decided to return to school to pursue Nursing and now that I'm out of school and working as a Nurse (part time), I have more time on my hands.

To make a long story short, I found an amazing couple who live in Texas this past weekend who have built an empire within the Shaklee organization (they make 6 figures yearly) and have themselves developed a training program that is awesome. I've been chatting with them on the phone and we really clicked. When I went to sign up under them this weekend, my application was rejected. What we discovered is that I may have difficulty getting out from underneath my original contract with initial upline sponsor here in Erie. I'm placing a call to Shaklee today to dispute this as I have not been active for 6 years and would like to choose who I work with to build my business. I understand that my initial upline will have to "sign off" and may choose to not approve me moving to another sponsor!! Jeeish!! There may even be a 6 month waiting period!!!

If this is the case, then I will probably not be doing the Shaklee business right away.

This is such disheartening news, but I understand the measure is put into place to keep people from hopping around within the business. Since I have not been buying for 6 years, I don't see how that qualifies me as a "hopper" LOL!! But I will know more today when I get off the phone with Shaklee. Maybe I'm worrying about nothing!

I am also interested in the Affiliate marketing of health related products to compliment my business and I'm also quite familiar with SBI! They are the cream of the crop from what I understand.

This is such a great little forum with so much information!

Best,
Jenny

P.S. I still cannot upload my avitar! Can I mail my picture to anyone to help me out here?

Hi Jenny,

I had to have Vishal upload my picture for me. I think the problem has something to do with needed to us the original picture, not one that is already cropped i think?
I wanted to mention that Melaleuca could be a good option for you also. The products are great, and they have a really good business model.
I am also a Nurse and planning to build a website to market from. Still in the thinking stage right now while I am working to drive traffic to my current website.

Good luck to you!!!!

Success to us all!!!!!

Trish

Hi Jenny,

Sorry to hear about the drama you are having. Hope you can work that out with Shaklee.

Yes, I do promote affiliate products as well as network marketing products on the same site.

Before you decide on affiliate products to promote, decide on a niche topic in the area of health that your Shaklee products will coincide with nicely.

You may not cover ALL of their product range on one site, but choose the products and topic that you MOST want to deal with and use that as a starting point for your brainstorming and keyword research.

I would definitely say that incorporating the training and tools of SBI into your business plan will make a world of difference to your success.

All the best.
Blessings,
Angie

Hey Jenny, just wanted to add my 2 bobs worth in. Meleleuca has good products and good customer service, so if all you wanted to do is buy the products and thats all, you would be right, but I found the compensation plan to be confusing and seems like they are behind the times, cause they send cheques out still. Anyway, just my opinion.

Monavie has a good product, tastes great, good management and customer service. Very simple business. But, it is purely word of mouth basically, and you have to sign people up manually just like meleleuca and amway, and the compensation plan seems to be very unfair and not as lucrative as I first thought when I first joined. All these companies, I have joined and experienced by the way.

herbalife are basically weight loss pills and is very expensive.

One company I have come back to also a few times is Vemma. Products are inexpensive and it seems very duplicable. simple comp plan and easy way to develop leads.

Hope this helps,

Mark

They have direct deposit if you want it, and they pay weekly if you want it.

You can sign people up over the phone or you can sign them up using the online enrollment form. Works very good for internet marketers.

They do seem to have a decent website, however, in looking at the 3 different start up packages, it ranges from $299.95 to $999.95 for start up costs which doesn't include the hidden costs of starting a business such as business cards, brochures etc.. etc..

I do like the idea of taking a one nutritional supplement for all your vitamin and mineral needs though.

I've actually been chatting with a couple out of Dallas Texas who have turned their Shaklee business into a 6 figure income and have successfully helped others build their business. Since I have not been active in Shaklee since 2004, I am going through the steps to pull away from my current downline so that I can align myself to the business unit leaders from Texas. Shaklee requires that I obtain signatures from 4 generations of upline in order to do this, but I made a call to my old business unit leader and she has been gracious about allowing me to make the switch.

Additionally I will have to pay a $50.00 administrative fee to Shaklee to make the change. Although it is a bit of an annoyance to have to go through all these paces, I can fully understand and appreciate why Shaklee has these measures built in to their system and can even respect it. I mean how unfair would it be to go through the process of working with someone in your downline only to have them want to jump ship later and sign up under someone else? It's nice to know that the company is working to protect my interest as a distributor.

I have been looking for a business opportunity since October of 2009 and think I have finally found the place that makes sense to me. I love the Shaklee products.. they are excellent quality, reasonably priced and have a 50 year rock solid reputation. I have mentioned to several of my friends about my interest in the business already and they seemed very favorable to the products.... I'm sure if I had told them I was becoming an Amway dealer, they would have run screaming from the room as they seem to have a bad reputation with most folks I know. I've fallen prey to them once many years ago and will NEVER go there again.

I love the people who are going to be my new upline. In my conversations with them I don't feel like I'm being "handled". They seem very laid back and easy to talk to. So many of the network marketers I have met throughout the years seem to do a hard sell approach and I really hate that! Nobody wants to be taken across the finish line kicking and screaming!

OK enough of my rant here. I made the decision this week to make Shaklee my company of choice. In addition I'm building a website and blog to do some affiliate marketing. I would like to market health related products (like the vitamix) on my website in conjunction to my Shaklee. Any ideas of affiliate programs out there who concentrate on health related products?

Thanks all.. the information here has been very helpful.

Blessings to all,
Jenny

HAHA, and with good reason, I have heard that 5 of their products are on the Mayo Clinics list of known carcinogens.

The Mayo Clinic, on the other hand, uses Melaleuca laundry products. Great testimony to the quality and price of the products.
