Ok so my sister has an online business that is doing really well. I don't know if these scammers got her info from off the internet but I thought this information would be useful for everyone.

So my sister gets a call a couple of days ago from someone that says they are with a collection agency for the Government. They tell her that she is being charged with Check Fraud and that two officers will be at her home the next day to escort her to prison. They had her SSN and Bank account number. This guy continues by telling her that she will have a $3- 5,000 fine and that she can pay it now to avoid charges etc. Well she checked online and found out they were a scam so told him "nice try" and then hung up. The fact is this is pretty scarry that they had all this info and although it seems a little fishy, it can also be convincing if they have your info.

No matter what anyone wants from you stall and look their "company" up online and there should be some info as to weather or not they are a scam. Be Careful!

If the government wants your money, they will just show up on your doorstep. Why would they call and give you a chance to take off?

So many of these scams can be avoided with nothing more than common sense.

I hope she isn't just going to leave it at that, with them having her SSN and bank account info...

As much as I despise this kind of stuff, you have to admire their sheer audacity.

Namaste

Collection agencies do not have arresting powers. If you were going to prison no law enforcement agency is going to call you and tell you they are coming to arrest you; they would just show up. It is absurd really what scammers come up with. Anyone who receives such a call needs to call the police immediately. Try to write down as much as you can about the conversation and any identifying information they may have given. Even if the information is fake, the proper officials can collect this information with other information coming in to link to a particular area, name, number, location etc. and at the least identify the call as a scam in order to warn people. Don't forget, you will not be the last person they target and the next person they call may not realize the call is intended to scam them out of money.
