johnjimat: i find its hard to use.. just for me.. I agree actually. I mean, I also found it harder to use. But as with every other tool in life, once you get used to it.... also, there's less and less reason to justify sticking to XP these days when soon it'll be an operating system that is two generations behind. It can't be convenient to need to install a new version of Quicken, for instance, that is only made available for Vista or Windows 7.
Though I prefer XP hands down, I see the value in starting to used to the newer formats - especially since getting used to the newer once is only uncomfortable or whatever at the beginning of the transition.

I cannot for the life of me find my XP disk anywhere! So I'm downloading openoffice (thank you Singapoor ) and see if that helps me. I do like Vista as a package, so I think I'll just have to stump up the millions Microsoft want to extort from me when I can afford it!

Has any one considered Linux? Microsoft has a lot of evolving security issues that will require as well an evolving security system installed and updated on your computer. You'll also need to buy the Office and html editors and every piece of software you'll need to do your marketing job.
Mac is expensive, and new Macs use the same hardware as PC, and the newest Mac operating system OS X is built on a unix kernel, like Linux.
Linux, on the other hand, is cheaper (and sometimes it is for FREE) and includes all of the software you might dream of (or not) with no security issues and installs on both PC and Mac.
There is a reason IBM only produces computers with Linux on them. And by the way, you'll find those in banks where they need the highest security measures possible.

Linux, now that's a thought. In true Devil's Advocate style, here are some reasons why linux is not (yet) ready for the desktop. And here are more reasons why Linux is better. I personally wouldn't make the move though.
I'm not geek enough to feel comfortable that I could make necessary tweaks if some issue pops up, which happens all the time in opensource environments. Also the fact that it's treated like the ugly stepchild by software developers means it's not as easy to find stuff that runs on it - not impossible to find excellent alternatives to things, but I mean it's not exactly the lazy person's operating system.

Actually I am not a real geek myself, I am just a user. The 3D desktop environment in linux has no match with Microsoft yet. And the community support (like the one we have here in this forum) balances the minor open source problems.
I haven't got any so far by the way, and I have been using Mandriva (previously Mandrake), Ubuntu, and other small ones on the old machines for the past 3 years.
My daughter is 3 years old, and she can start a browser and get youtube from the bookmarks, It's not that different from windows, you only need to know the names of the places.
You can be as lazy as a microsoft or mac user (no offense ), but when you have to do some serious stuff you have the capacity to do it.

One more advantage in Linux that is unbeatable. You can assign a whole HD partition as an extension to the RAM .

I stand corrected, seems LINUX has really changed since the last time I looked at it. Well, LINUX itself is the same of course, but I mean the fact that now it takes less geekery to use the thing is a difference. Thank you Fedora, Ubuntu and openSUSE. It's a very good point you make yahia

BTW yahia, it's great that you're a long time day-to-day user of LINUX because you're the perfect person to ask this question ! Of the versions you've tried, which do you like the most?

Mandriva 2009, the gnome window manager is at the top. Still KDE is fine until you start doing complicated stuff.
The last Ubuntu I used was 8.04, it has gnome WM only, and it was even better than Mandriva. Now my daughter occupied that machine and I only have access to the mandy one .

Hey yahia, thanks for that . I think I'll give LINUX Mint a go for my mom's desktop (since she keep managing to develop a spyware problem with Vista). LINUX Mint's an Ubuntu derivative, so that's reassuring since Ubuntu's really newbie-friendly - will probably do a Mint GNOME combo.

For those debating between Windows XP and Windows Vista, please keep in mind that Microsoft will stop supporting XP in 2010. Yep there is an "End of Life" for XP as Microsoft prepares to roll out Microsoft 7 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/ which is at RC stage of development with a tentative planned Final version available for release this fall.
Linux is a good alternative and for the most part you can do most everything most Home Business online people need to do, and best of all, usually more securely than with Windows.

IMoneyReview: I have recently switched from using XP to Windows 7 release candidate on one of my two computers and so far I absolutely love it! I know four people running Windows 7 and one has been on it for over a year (he's a former Microsoft employee and literally, can't wait once there's an opportunity to hop on a new OS/update/etc.). I've never heard any complaints. but granted, my friends don't mind running RCs and typically know what to do when they encounter glitches.
With all of that said, I'm more the type to wait for Microsoft full releases (and not even generation one releases at that). But I can say this about Vista and Windows 7... and as tygersclaw was pointing out, no matter what, there will be a day when using Windows will mean letting go of XP. So it's encouraging that folks are talking about Windows 7 in positive ways .

My first computer was one o' those Pieced-together contraptions, (you know, parts from here and there, and a few others from "elsewhere"). A woman next door to me, at that time, had an older Mac, and taught me how to use it. But mine was a PC, with Windows 95. (Let's compare bananas and cherries!) My next couple machines had Windows 98. My land-lady, (then), had Windows XP Student Edition on hers. When I heard that Windows would soon stop supporting 98, a friend of mine reformatted my comp and put XP Pro in it. My firewall crashed, and every virus in the universe was having a party in my machine. Since then, his XP PRO C.D. "exploded" in another friends rom. (Obviously, not available any more!) He got a C.D. of XP Home, and burned a copy of it, which he gave to me. It seems to be working just fine still, in this much newer, (but still not "NEW"), machine.

I was so bored that my minds stopped working, so I switched to youtube for a while.
I found this IBM commercial, and it responds to those who have fears from open source stuff efficiency. Banks use Linux, it has to be more efficient than anything else.
