With Bum Marketing I have a Squidoo lens that is number one in Yahoo's search engine out of 23,500,000 hits. The article of the same name that points to this lens is number two. The same lens is number five in MSN (numbers one and two are 2 other articles of mine that promote the same product).

I added a number to the phrase (making it the number one position mentioned above), wrote a new article and this ended up on Google's number one spot (only out of 331000 hits).

This article is also in AOL's number one spot (oh and look a different one of mine is in the 6th position from article base but only out of 30100 hits) It's also number one in MSN out of 215000.

Darn, it didn't make the first page in Yahoo...but my lens is at number three.

Anyone gonna want my free ebook when I finish it?

Awesome! Great job! I totally agree, article marketing, if done correctly, is extremely powerful.

Billypilgrim,

This is something I haven't done yet. I have never been much of a writer. Can you point me in the right direction as far as where to start?

Thanks,
Becky

Writing a good article is not really that difficult. It's not unlike writing a "Term Paper," really. You begin with a premise, do your R&D, develop it, put it in outline form with your salient points grouped together logically, each one building a case for your main premise. Then you write it, proof read it for spelling, grammar and such, see if it "reads well." You want to write to the average reader, not too intellectual and not too simple, either. That's the nuts and bolts of it. It's not that hard to do.

The main thing is write about something that really interests you, something that you have passion about. You can bet there are other folks out there who have like passion and interest. The most important thing, in my humble opinion, is to make it your own, your own thoughts, your own words, speak from your heart. That's what will attact people to it, cause them to stop and read it. Don't be overly clinical or analytical. Let your emotion come through. People identify with that, more so than some "cold" didactic thesis like you would find in some trade journal.

You need the first part, the R&D, the logical, well written and well developed presentation of your point, in order to establish credibility. But you need the second part, the passion, emotion, words from the heart, to grab your reader's attention, cause them to first identify with you, then remember you, and most importantly, pass your words, your articles on to more readers, thus establishing you as someone worth reading.

The more your articles get quoted, passed around, etc. the more you become "branded." You will then get both back links to your website and people who have read you and identified with you clicking on your sig file links to find out more about "you." That's the kind of traffic you want to have. That's qualified traffic.

I hope that makes sense.

Mitch

I disagree on two points. Writing articles for marketing is NOT like writing a term paper, it's like having a conversation with a friend who trusts you.
And why try to re-invent the wheel by trying to drive traffic to something YOU like. It's about the end customer, not you. Find a niche where people are ALREADY buying and market that.

Hello Mitch and BP,

This is quite an interesting discussion.

PMHayes:
Writing a good article is not really that difficult. It's not unlike writing a "Term Paper," really. You begin with a premise, do your R&D, develop it, put it in outline form with your salient points grouped together logically... You want to write to the average reader, not too intellectual and not too simple, either.

BillyPilgrim:

You are both saying the same thing, only differently.

BP, when Mitch used the term paper analogy, he also expanded on what he meant. He talked about begining with a permise (a strong article title), doing research (gathering the facts), preparing an outline (making a draft), and logically grouping your points (creating an interesting flow).

He also talked about writing "to the average reader, not too intellectual and not too simple, either."

To me, that means less formal than a term paper but not too simplistic. In other words, the tone of the article ought to be informal and conversational.

He goes on to support this with statements like:

- Make it your own, your own thoughts, your own words, speak from your heart.
- Don't be overly clinical or analytical
- Let your emotion come through

A good article will contain all those features.

Regarding your second point:

BillyPilgrim:
And why try to re-invent the wheel by trying to drive traffic to something YOU like. It's about the end customer, not you. Find a niche where people are ALREADY buying and market that.

I understand what you mean, as far as it relates to addressing the end customer's what's-in-it-for-me perspective. But if my passion and interest happens to be in a product that people are ALREADY buying, I'd say that gives me a decided advantage.

I can now make my article much more interesting, informative, and useful because I understand the reader and really know how to connect.

In this case, the reader is just like me!

BP: Congrats. You totally rock.

I'm with A8ch - I don't think that you and Mitch are on different pages. The two of you essentially agree. A8ch is correct in asserting that the two of you agree, but you both express it in different ways.

I'm confident that your lens is about an in-demand search phrase. It's easy as pie to rank high on a not in demand search phrase. It's another thing entirely to rank high or even number one for an in demand phrase on either Google, MS Live, or Yahoo.

Speaking of lenses, I have a lens currently (could easily get knocked way down tomorrow or the next day in the SERPs) ranked number one for an in demand search phrase on Yahoo. Go to Yahoo and type in "music polls" and you will see my in demand search phrase Squidoo lens "Music Polls" ranked number one out of over 200,000,000 serps. This is my lowest ranked lens. It was (Squidoo) ranked much higher earlier in the year.

I am currently number 11 out of 2.9 million on the Google serps for the said lens.

I won't waste your time by bragging about how high I rank on search engines with the rest of my Squidoo lenses or any of my other non-Squidoo sites.

I see you as an article marketing expert. You have my respect and I eagerly await your free eBook. Please PM me with a link when you are ready and I will be happy to download your eBook. I am very much looking forward to benefiting from your experience.

You strike me as someone who knows from experience.

You do me too much honor. I'm hardly an expert, as my book will explain. It's ready I just need to set up a distribution chain. I didn't put everything in it because I wanted to get it finished. But check these pages real soon.

Writing website and blog content can be as easy as writing like you speak if you master basic seo principles.

If you're serious about writing and getting it done in a timely fashion pick up a copy of the "30 Minute Article Writer" by Melanie Mendelson. It will help you get organized and become a better writer at the same time.

Here's an example of the power of article marketing.

I wrote an article yesterday and by this afternoon I had 145 people click through to my landing page (a free Squidoo lens). Out of that number 44 clicked to the merchant page and I made one sale.

And my article is on Googles second page (and someone else already picked it up for their site...backlinks, baby)
