Hello everyone,

I was just sitting at my computer thinking about all of the people who have products....

But have NO Idea how to sell their product...

They have NO Idea how to "Market" their product.

There are a lot of reasons for this. One is, people go to college for FOUR long years to learn marketing.. The strange thing is...

They come out of college and still don't know nearly all there is to learn about marketing.

So with so many ways to market and SO much information. It is really hard to find a good starting spot.

Let me help some people that don't know where to start.

Market Research

This is the part where you will succeed or fail... Hands Down. Here is where you will.....

Suit up before battle

Do you want to be the guy on the battlefield with
*NO armor
*NO weapons

That seems silly =].

Sure you can throw a product up and tell people how great it is....

But that guy/gal that did their research will win every time.

Do you want to know WHY they will win every time?

Why is research needed?

Because they know you.

They know what you want.

They know why you want it.

They know how much you are willing to spend.

They even know what to say to make you buy from them.

Now I can pick out any product on clickbank and send you there...

I mean after all... Their sales pages are going to sell you ... right?

If I send you there... You will buy something right?..

Probably not.

In fact the good marketers can afford PPC and such for one reason and one reason only...

More people that click their links BUY.

Its true.. They know their market.

So enough rambling about step one.

Let me give you some pointers to put that into action.

Grab a Pen and a piece of Paper

Write down the products you are selling.

For example. I'm going to sell an anti aging product.

Write down Problems that this product fixes.

In my case it fixes:

Hurting joints
Troubles getting around (mobility)
Feeling old
Looking old
Fear of Getting Old

This is the only time you will hear me tell you to pick out those negative things.. They are emotions. You want to tap in on your buyers emotions.

This will also help in researching your target market.

Now what you will want to do is write down who will benefit from the solution to those problems.

Who will benefit from:
Feeling Younger
Less Joint Pain
Better Mobility
Looking Younger
Knowing they will stay younger LONGER.

This is where it gets fun.

You are actually targeting your market and feeling their feelings without being them..

This makes it very easy to relate to them in pre sales copy, email campaigns, etc. Then when you send them to a sales page. They will like, trust, and respect you much more than a direct link to an overly hyped page.

Talk about more sales .

Some people that would benefit are:

People with arthritis
People recovering from surgery
OLD people
Middle Aged People
Women who want to stay young
Men who fear getting old

My topics are just an example and most are too broad probably. But you want to pick several groups of people.

Then you have a TARGETED group with problems that you KNOW about and a SOLUTION to those problems.

Now that you have that.

Where can you find these people?

Where can you find the people that you just listed?

Use google:
Join google groups
Answer Yahoo questions
join forum
network within your niche
grow your business one product at a time.

Its 12:01 at night and I just read someones post about not making sales and I wanted to post this as a starting point for some.

I am sure I missed things and this is just a general step one guideline the way I like to do it.

There are a few other things I do in my research as most do.

But hopefully some other people post research suggestions to this thread as well!

Hopefully this helps you or reminds you some things you may have missed in the past.

Matt

Matt, your post provides solid guidance for the beginner and serves as a great reminder for the experienced marketer. You outlined a practical and systematic approach to targeting the right demographic, which is a critical piece of the marketing puzzle.

Success depends on identifying the right "farmer" every time.

Great post!

Hermas

Thank you Hermas.

I believe too many people forget that.. That's why when a sales page that converts at 3% for some.... won't even convert at .005% for others.

Hi Matt,

I like the Farmer analogy in the title. Good post.

When I write to sell, two of the main components are stressing benefits and a call to action at the end.

Though there are times when a "to inform" post is called for, most of the selling is best done in a conversational format or tone.

Thanks I actually thought of the title after I posted it and I changed it.

I believe when you do it that way. People tend to like, trust, and respect you more.

I completely agree.
