Most of you would be aware of adwords keyword tool. This tool has been used by marketers for years to do keyword research. I am too a big time fan of it, as we do not have any other tool that gives good insight of keyword popularity for free.

For newbies, you can see the tool here

Now here is my point. I researched on a topic and here are the numbers that interested me to select.

Primary keyword - 12,000 searches per month
Primary keyword plural - 3,600 per month
    Total = 15,000+ per month
Means, 1,250 searches a day. WOW!

Remember this is a two word keyword.

I set up a niche keyword website for this and started doing link building. In about 3 months time I achieved rank 1 for my primary keyword singular and rank 2 for primary keyword plural.

As per the theory I should have got 1250 visitors a day. For graciousness I am giving 90% error value to the tool and I expected around 100 visits a day.

You know what is happening?????? I just get less than 5 visits a day. Oops.... This is how the tool works [IMG]

So people, please don't go by numbers as I did. You will be disappointing. We need to think from a broader perspective....

Yeah, I'd say that the tool stinks for giving you good stats, but its effective at giving you lots of keyword ideas. Also, don't forget to use your brain...that's the best keyword tool out there! [IMG]

lol that's right and I always use the 'exact' feature rather than the 'broad' feature. It makes a dramatic difference in the numbers and I find it more acurate.

But then nothing ever works the same, regardless what you do...It's all part of the game...[IMG]

Lets not forget that we are talking about 1250 SEARCHES a day.. not clicks, not conversions. It would be nice in webmaster tools to see the # of impressions for organic searches (like adwords does for the ads).

I've had keyword tools (The provided by the search engines) tell me that I'll see 10 impressions a month when my backend is showing 50 a day.. I always take them with a grain of salt.

Just remember that you get what you pay for. If you want real results, you have to invest "real" money.

Thanks for letting us know that Sam. Even I have observed that the numbers are too exaggerated.

Yeah, it's better to go by the exact searches per month. Google's keyword tool is relatively accurate, but it's based on the last month's data.

Wordtracker is up to date, but it's based on metacrawler data and is not as accurate.

Position 1 statistically gets only 42% of the monthly clicks. Position 2 gets 12%. Position 3 gets 8% and it keeps going down from there.

Though it may not be 100% accurate, the adwords tool is very useful to get an idea of how people search for a particular niche using different keyword phrases.

Another reason maybe, as said by carterstory, all searches are not ending in clicks.
