I have what may be a rather naive question, but if you cloak links to your website using things like tinyurl.com or Web Traffic Juggernaut, does the search engine recognize it as a backlink to your site for page ranking purposes? In other words, do cloaked links to your website help you in the search engine rankings?

Depends on how you cloak it, but I would say tiny url is a dead giveaway you are trying to hide a link.

Consider a paid cloaker, or do a search fora free link cloaking tool.

I use G-Locker (free). Works great.

I have been told no it doesn't count the link back to you for SEO.
The link the google sees is to tinyurl.com or what ever service you are using.
If you have a self hosted wordpress site there is a plugin called prettylink that does the cloaking/redirecting directly through your url so you get the SEO benefit.
The link would would post would look something like this http://yourwebsite,com/shorturl

    Hi Andy,

TinyURL does not pass PR. It does receive it though - since you are linking to them.

Though sites like Twitter force you to use TinyURL, I wouldn't use it for your own site. You don't get link juice and using it detracts from the trust factor.

You might research some other methods if you feel that you really need to cloak your links. I don't cloak any of my links I hope that helps you decide whether or not to do so.

  5. I also never cloak my links. This rases questions within my site visitors. I prefer to have a clear link and let them think what they want.
I don't think it has any connection to Google's PR.

    Same as newbie shield

I agree with everyone here - I would not cloak or shorten your url unless using something like twitter.

If you are making a forum post or similar - use your actual url. Sometimes using a url shortening service or cloaking service will create mistrust with your visitors.

The truth is that the only people who know what an affiliate link is are other internet marketers. Most people who come to your site will have no idea between a cloaked link or one thats not.

The truth is, as long as you have good content, a strong call to action, and strike up enough interest in them, they are going to want to click on that link anyway.

The only time I cloak links is for Twitter and that is only because of the 140 character limit.

I believe in the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

As has already been said, the trust factor is lower with cloaked links. I want people to have an idea where they are going.

For the times I want to do some tracking, I will create a sub domain or a folder.

For example if I want to track clicks coming from an ad in Alaska I will use the sub-domain alaska.domain.com instead of www.domain.com.

Prettylink for Wordpress works well too.
