Anyone working with coastals is from Georgia? If there is someone from Georgia, would you please tell me how I will get the license? my director asked me to call city Govt. or county office. I have emailed my city govt. my haven't got anything back yet. Would you tell me what I actually need to do?

Call the Chamber of Commerce. Here in Maryland, they require a class to register as a business. We are in the process of that now.

    Hi Sarah,

Here is a direct link to the Georgia state online business registration:

    https://services.georgia.gov/dor/olbr/TaxRegistrationGateway

Follow the steps and see where they take you - hopefully between their Q&A and your Director you will soon be ready to go!

Yes. I am not a lawyer, but you don't need a license to operate a home based business. However, I believe it upgrades your credibility when you are registered with legal entities and associations. I would suggest you continue to get licensed in your state. To tell you the truth, I don't think it is a license or permit, it is just a registration as a small business.

I emailed my city govt. they sent me a link to the application for inhome business license. But, in this application one of the docs required are lease docs of the home. I live with my parents and I don't wanna tell 'em about this until I have some success in it. Would that matter if I did a few sales without obtaining a license? I would obtain my license soon after that. If I told my parents they would be don't do it don't do it and all. Another question, would me having home business in their home affect their taxes?

    Hi Sarah,

Is your Director in Georgia? If so, I would direct this question to her (him?)

I don't know about the specifics of the application - and I'm not an attorney - but it almost sounds as if you are looking at the wrong application. Yes, you will be doing business at home, but nothing that affects zoning, or the neighborhood, etc. which is what an "in-home license" is typically geared toward and why they would ask for your parents leasing information.

I think Noreen is correct, that you just need to *register* as a business to get your sales permit. And, no, if you are an adult of legal age and are not claimed as a dependent on your parent's income tax return, then what you do shouldn't affect them.

If you are truly concerned, though, contact an attorney. Your local college or university may have a resource to offer that is either free or has a sliding scale fee structure.

    Good luck!

this is the link they sent me http://www.acworth.org/departments/departmentFiles.php

it is an inhome business occupational license application .. no, my director is not from georgia but she told me I might need occupational license .. I am gonna be 21 this year. in fact I am almst 21 But as I live at their home and will be using their home for the business, would their taxes be effected?

Thanks for the reply. As Noreen said she did it in the beginning without the license or registration.. can I do it as well? do you think it is a good idea?

    Hi Sarah,

To be honest, I think you should call or go into your state offices and ask for their help in determining whether or not you must file for the occupational license. As I already said, I believe you just need a sales permit so the state can track you and get their share of taxes down the road[IMG]

As to your parents taxes - there are myriad factors involved there. For example, if you are claimed as their dependent, then your income will affect their taxes as far as their ability to claim you. If you're not a dependent, then it isn't a concern.

I also started my business before I got my sales license, but only by a bit. Again, I'm not an attorney, but I think that many people in Coastal probably get going with the business first, then worry about the official aspects a bit later.
