New here. Is my goal realistic?

    Hi there,
I'm new around here but have been thinking of pursuing a home based or online business for a while now. Growing up, my sister and I would ask our parents if we were rich or poor. They would only say we were "comfortable". I make a pretty good living at my "real" job (biotech), but could use a bit more before I'd really consider myself "comfortable" with my financial situation.

I'm looking to make a modest $500 per month in supplemental income through a home business I can do in my spare time or my wife could work on during the day. That's not unrealistic is it? I've seen so many home business sites with "make $5000 a week" or other such ridiculous claims that I don't know what to believe anymore. Usually when I see a statement like that, I stop reading and move on.

So can anyone point me in the right direction to start out?

Thanks very much for your time!

If you feel it's realistic then there is no need to get a second opinion. Just because somebody else has higher expectations should not cause you to rethink your expectations.

But the reality is that (in 99.9% of cases), when you reach your goal, your expectations will increase and so will your goal [IMG] It's just the way our mind works.

I am glad to see you are being realistic - that in itself will help you a lot. [IMG]

As you start researching, you will see that there are a variety of ways to make money online so feel free to ask questions on here as you come up with them.

    Welcome by the way.[IMG]

Yes you have a healthier attitude than most!

Many people are looking to make $500 in a minute and get frustrated when they don't.

If you keep a good attitude and BUILD a business, slowly...the right way, you may actually exceed your expectations!

Vishal, your post mirrors my exact sentiment and I couldn't have stated it more effectively. [IMG]

Dr_Boo, hello and welcome to the forum.

It's human nature to look to external sources to draw reference for our own identity, ambitions, skills, achievements and so on. That's why we tend to rate ourselves in comparison to others.

The truth is: our reality is our own. I believe it's more meaningful to measure one's goals and ambitions against one's own abilities. It's about self-referal. The "competition" ought to be with ourselves and not with the other guy.

That is the only true method to measure what one can do, and it is totally independent of what the other fellow has done, or is capable of doing.

Dr_Boo: I've seen so many home business sites with "make $5000 a week" or other such ridiculous claims that I don't know what to believe anymore.
If those claims seem ridiculous to you at the moment, it simply means that your reality is not yet expansive enough to accept that you can make that much. However, when you move from making $500 a month to making $500 a week, and then on to $1,500 a week, you'll be surprised at how confident you'll become at the possibilty of pulling in $5,000 a week.

Sudden that figure would appear to be less ridiculous and much more doable, thanks to your "new" reality. You'll see yourself to be within striking distance of that target. Plus you'll be empowered by your growing confidence, know-how and skill which would have been developed from your recent earnings achievements.

The journey of a great distance is covered in small steps... but one must take the steps. [IMG]

Glad to see sensible folks out there. It looks like you've made up your mind to start a home business, you just need to find the right business. Credibility is key. I did a lot of research on different businesses, always checking with the BBB, etc, and also "interviewed" several different "teams" within the businesses themselves. I already knew I wanted to own my own business, and work from home. I already knew anything realistic would take time and effort to be beneficial. I wish there were more people out there like you and I who are realistic about income. If there was a way to make millions without any investment or effort - no one would be working!

Your goal is very realistic and it might take some time to achieve it. As long as you have the passion and attitude toward your goal. You will reach your goal very soon.

    Hi Boo,

Vishal described the nature of the mind well and Hermas expanded quite eloquently.

The sky is the limit for those who are willing to put in the time and the effort to develop the skill sets and rack up the experience.

There's really no max cap. You get out what ever you put into it.

The first thing to do is to identify the main components of online marketing (including technology, etc) - a broad overview.

Then you drill down into each component. You can master almost anything in life this way. I've done it for decades and it's served me quite well.

I've been pointing others in the direction of the free 30 Day Challenge as a good starting point and they seem fairly pleased about it. Visit the link below and try it out:

    www.thirtydaychallenge.com

Keep in mind that it's just a starting point.

You can continue reading this forum and various make money online sites.

Long term commitment and passion will be your greatest allies.

    Good luck,

    ~Newbie Shield~

This is a great thread. I think that I need to commission Hermas to write a motivational book. His words ring so true. For the past 20+ years I have tried my hand at home based businesses. In the beginning I started with Amway. Many over the years have been down on that opt but I thank them from the bottom of my heart. You see they spent ton's of time on personal development. Before I had a fire back in 2000 I had 1000's of tapes from them. They gave me the mindset to see making large amounts of money as something I could accomplish.

Every opportunity on the market has the potential to make you millions. To put it in perspective let's give you a scenario. Imagine if you met Oprah one day and did her a huge favor. As repayment she said you could come on her broadcast and promote anything. Well chances are you would have great results on anything you promoted on her show. Now is this likely to happen? In truth it's really up to you. Do you believe that this is possible? If you do it is. If you don't then it wont.

To hedge your bet a bit you need to learn a few skills. Ive heard that success is when opportunity meets preparedness. This is my motto. So get prepared. Learn how to advertise. To sell any product you need to know how to advertise. I remember as a kid a toy called the pet rock. Yes I'm dating myself. On the surface it sounds like a stupid idea. But the creator made tons selling them. Learn how and where to present and advertise you business and success follows. Don't worry about the people that say no. Thank them for their time and ask them for referrals. I'm in travel so I offer vacations to those that bring me more clients. You can find a ton of free gifts on the net to use to promote your business.

If you can conceive it you can achieve it. This is something I have heard all the way back from my Bible studies classes to watching a movie called The Secret. It works. I envision great things and they manifest themselves in my everyday life. You have the same power. So harness it and use it.

By the way when Oprah gives me the call ill be sure to invite Vishal and Hermas to go on the show with me and my wife. Success to you all.

    Adam,

I'd be honored to share the stage with you, your wife and Vishal. In the
mean time, I should get started immediately on that motivational book. [IMG]

$500 per month is very realistic. I myself is new but i am already doing $300 per week now. All that is needed is hard work!

Your message reminds me of the self-made millionaires. Rarely did they ever think they could make a fortune for themselves. They struggled and tried and suffered a lot of hardship to get there.

Afterward, many would lose that money, but found it extremely easy to make a substantial amount the next time around, saying "The first million is the hardest."

It's all in your frame of reference.

    Cheers,

    Dr_Boo,

This will be brief, and some may disagree.

My recommendation is to find someone that is willing to mentor you with your goals in mind. Yes you can do it alone. However you can get help from a qualified mentor to advance your efforts.

    Best,

Very true! Our perspective influences our reality.

In hindsight, the "first" achievement of any worthwhile objective always seems to be the most difficult. Perhaps that's because we're mostly making things up as we go, experimenting and sifting through the options to see which works best.

Once we've figured out a practical system, that becomes our template for future pursuits. We simply follow the directions, free of the anxiety and doubt that shadowed our maiden attempt. The sense of familiarity makes subsequent challenges seem less daunting.
