a wireless modem, and a wireless card. if your modem isn't wireless, get a wireless router.

Thank you bigpip! I have a wireless card in-built in my laptop. My modem isn't wireless and is a usb one. So I think I need either a wireless modem or modem and wireless router. I think second option would be desirable as I can connect additional pcs to the Net through the wireless router.

I would suggest this excellent video on linksys.com on wireless home networking.

No prob...although, let me tell you that you don't need the router to connect additional PCs. I just have a wireless DSL modem, and I can connect to it from all the PCs in my house. No router needed. I'm not exactly sure what benefit a router would provide you that a wireless modem wouldn't...as long as it is a quality modem with WEP security, you should be fine,

If you are using from home, no need to get a router. Like bigpip said, a wireless modem is enough to connect to a few pcs at home.

I have a home network that can compete with some business networks. I use Linksys for my Wireless and Hardwired connections and off that we have 1 desktop on 2nd floor on wireless, 3 laptops on wireless, 4 desktops on hardwire connection (one of which streams to my internet radio station) and all this took me maybe 1.5 hours to set-up, secure and such.

When setting up your wireless network, please remember to CHANGE THE ADMIN PASSWORD. Sorry to shout but you have NO idea how many Wireless modems are setup and the main Admin password is not changed.

For one company...yes company...I happened across, the Admin had not been changed so I did it, then went in and as well blocked access to numerous popular websites including their own.

After a hour or so, I went in, spoke to the office manager (who thought he was a geek as he set up the network) and showed him what I did. He hired me on a contract to maintain their network and now it is secure and safe for them to use internally and online too.

    Cherie and TygersClaw,

This thread was started in 2006.

Hopefully by now, Vishal has his wireless network up. ;)

You might check the thread dates before you post.

Not yet! As I'm the only one using a PC in my home, I really never felt the need to set up one. And I like sitting in one dedicated place rather than moving around in my house, unless you have a mansion of course [IMG]
