Hi all,
I'm re-designing my current website, but would like to ask, sort of a poll, if you will:
What grabs your interest when you reach someone's homepage? I realize everyone's tastes are different, but what is it that make you stay, or makes you click away? Words? Graphics? Background color? Something else?

I think the two most important things, other than the copywriting aspect, that grabs visitor's interest are the color combination and layout. Too many colors, links, confusing layout and navigation can be a big turn off.

Color and layout are the first things to impact me too! Actually, it's how well they work together that I find attractive. If it makes me think interesting... creative... fresh then I'll stay awhile and look around.
It's always and inspiration to see the diversity of ways basic web design features can be arranged to hold one's interest.

One thing that is definite turn off (for me anyways) is when upon initial loading of a site you are bombarded by overly loud music or someone who has decided to narrate their page to you and they don't provide the visitor with a way to turn it off.
I agree these can be effective tools and have their applications, but I much prefer being given a choice when it comes to audio!
On the other side of the coin, I agree that color and layout are important. I have heard with regard to color that Blue statistically has a higher conversion rate than others.

Definitely go for something "clean" and professional looking.
As stated above, color scheme and layout are very important.

you can get some cool free website templates... choose a best layout that makes ur visitors come back regularly... you can get a free template one of the best free site... www.templatesbox.com

Thanks you guys - you've made very good points - I also dislike loading a homepage and hearing music. i also dislike having to wait for a homepage to load - especially since I don't have DSL -

I see a lot of very boring "professional" looking websites out there. Black type on a white background is very dull and its difficult to recall having visited a page that looks like millions of others.
For my business I want to make an indelible mark on the visitor's mind, achieve consistently high Search engine rankings, sell my thing. Conforming to "accepted" norms is a low priority.
For a sales letter marketed through PPC the approach would be different. SInce my ZDM home page is a "brand" I make my own rules as to how the brand should look. Its been working for me.

Exactly!
For me if I don't see a user-friendly layout right from the get go...I'll most likely click away. The unfortunate thing is there may be some really good stuff there, but I'm not going to risk a headache looking for it.
I may get some boo's here but I honestly don't like being interrupted with pop-ups or pop unders or anything of that nature. I know it's been proven to work. But I personally find it almost like receiving spam email. And I'll probably click away from that also.
I don't have any pop-up features on any of my sites for the simple fact that I can't bring myself to do it.
What I DO like is immediate benefits to the product or service listed right away. That's what personally gets my attention.

I like homepages that have PERSONALITY.
Of course, copy is important, but even as an affiliate marketer, I HATE HATE HATE the standard layout of black lettering, white background, yellow highlighting.
Yeah, I mean, no harsh graphics, no cheesy graphics, and just being YOU. Whether you're selling or not. But I think it's a great question--I've been pondering on the same topic.

We all know that sex sells. It doesn't seem to matter the subject. If there is a half naked woman on there somewhere, you should do alright.
