These are pretty much effective tips for getting Free Website Traffic, may be you already know about these tips, just i am recapping and I believe it defenitely helps to newbies....
1. Free Classifieds - This system works more effectively, especially if you have 'Make Money Online' related websites. There are some popular Free Classifieds Websites around there to post your ads for free, just make a search 'Free Classifieds' 'Post Ads' etc in Google and you can find some good classifieds sites list. The title of your ad must be attention grabbing to make it stand out from the rest. The description should be short but informative. Don't forget to add your website url in the ad form.
2. Link Exchange - Make relevant link exchange with other sites and preferably on homepage. If not, try to add your link on their directory. It will help to get traffic both from their sites visitors and also it boosts Search Engines Rankings. Don't try exchange with Link Farms, also don't exchange links with more than 100 links in that page.
3. Blog Traffic - Create a Blog in Blogspot.com and make some posts with good content and make a link on your main website, it helps start getting traffic from Search Engines quickly, especially from Google. Update your blog regularly, so that the Search Engines spiders crawl your blog at regular intervals. Ping your blog whenever you update. Generate RSS feeds to your blog, so that visitors can read in a RSS reader right on their desktop.
4. Opt-in Email Lists - Its very important on getting repeated visitors to your website and this can be done by capturing visitors email address. You can send emails whenever you update the website. Use autoresponders like aweber or freeautobot for follow-up emails. Don't bombard with emails daily with offers. It is a surefire way to make your visitors click the unsubscribe link. Give an interval of minimum 2-3 days for each mail.
5. Forum Traffic - Its another important factor getting free traffic from discussion forums, make a search 'keyword+forum' on Google to find your website related forums and add your url in the signature. Make some useful conversations with others and don't try to promote your products or offers directly in the posts. It also helps on SEO aspects.
6. Writing Articles - If you have enough time and having writing skills, write articles on topics that interests you and submit to article sites. Content will always be the king and most of the websites look for content to add on regular basis. If your articles are informative enough, they are more likely to get published on other websites. Don't forget to add your website link in resource box of the article.
7. Ebook Traffic - Compile some useful information about your niche and make it an ebook and give it away for free to others. Add your website link in the ebook and allow the permissions to give it away for free to others. You can also entice your visitors to sign up for your list by offering the ebook in return.

How effective are blogs for getting traffic? Does it depend on the links to the blog or how often you update them

You can get a lot of traffic through blogs, as long as there isn't too much competition for the keywords you are targeting. You also have to make sure to ping your blogs, and make sure your blogs also get listed in the major search engines.

Blogs are not magical tools. Your ranking indeed depends on the backlinks and how frequently you update them. Their structure and functionality however give them an advantage over static websites.

This method has never worked for me in years online. Initially when I got started I used it a lot, but to no success (even with tracking)
I have recently come across LinkScout. has anybody had success with this?

Links pages have been so much abused that it's very difficult to get direct traffic from them. Therefore you must be extremely selective about whom you exchange links with. Links pages which run into endless pages are best to be avoided.

Great Info!!!
May I add a few ideas that have been helpfull for me?
* Myspace - Just place your ads / links in your profile and participate in the community. Dont spam or anything, if the people like you they will check out your profile and your site too.
* Safelists - Not many people like these anymore, but I still get good results with a select few. Forget the "blasters". Try individual, established lists. I like Mad Vlad best.
* Social Bookmarking - Like digg, jots, simpy, etc... Just another way to reach like minded people who may be interested in your site.

Viral marketing is great in combination with some of the ideas already mentioned. Viral marketing is getting people who have already visited or read your article to forward it to thier friends. This type of marketing is great with links back to your site and using an opt-in mailer for contueing communications.

cambrianne if you visit http://pingomatic.com you are able to ping your blog from here
And as to getting listed in the major search engines well, you can have quality content filled with keywords, also social bookmarking, writing articles, submitting your site link to directories, adwords, classified ads all these ways are great ways to promote your blog and get listed in the search engines.

Well I think best way still is writing quality articles on regular basis and submitting them to minimum 25 web ezine with good alexa ranking. Link of your website at the end of article drives a lot of direct and indirect traffic towards your website.

The points mentioned in the article are pretty much what a person needs to do to get more traffic to their site.
The more incoming links that are coming to your site, the better you would rank in the search engine.
Writing articles is also a great way to get some free links pointing to your site.

Submission of your site to social bookmarking websites could bring in traffic, but be careful that you don't get into spamming which may lead to ban.

One way if you have a blog one effective method is to find blogs that are related your niche, your website topic, and ask to exchange links on each other's blogrolls. This usually works better than getting indiscriminate links from websites that are unrelated to yours. The other technique I find useful is to frequent other blogs like mine and leave meaningful comments to posts, with a link to my blog. Most bloggers don't mind the link as long as the comment you leave is meaningful and not spammy.

This is a good list. I have found that blogging, social bookmarking and submitting to article directories are doing the best for me now with how I use my articles.
