I'm thinking of creating a blog for one of my sites and I found Wordpress to be an ideal choice. However, the sheer amount of learning courve associated with blogging makes me nervous.
Has anybody here got some tips?

Hey Vishal,
The Very First Thing you want to do is Pick a Subject. Since you already have your site, stick to that subject. Do you already have a name for the Blog? Using the site name in your Blog Title would be best.
Link the Blog to the Site and Vice Versa.
Since I don't know how far along you are in creating your Blog, it is difficult to give you much more than that.
The MAIN thing is Stick to what you know, it's a lot easier to write about something you are familiar with.

Hey pbuckley,
I think some advantages are that on a Blog, you add content every day, you build a following and you write about anything you like.
Most websites are Static, therefore once a person sees your site, they will probably not be back until they need that particular service.
Most of the people I know that conduct business on the web have Both websites and Blogs. Hope this helps.

The problem is not in starting but making it successful. That's what I was worried about. Regarding ads, of course I'm going to put them up

The biggest advantage I see of blogs over regular websites is the way blogs interlink each other. If you publish a good article, that blog page immediately gets linked from many blogs (how much depends on how established you are).

Thanks for the suggestion Hai. I usually don't like to incorporate images unless it's really necessary. I know they can be visually appealing but that's not what my goal is. My intention is to hook the readers through quality information and make them click on those ads

Well.. if you read my blog you'll have an idea. So blogs are like journals or diaries.. Talk about how your day went. But since we are in marketing.. It's like have commercials in your blogs. Sometimes I talk about my day and the experiences I've had with my products. So I post my testimonies. Since blogs are more personal... after people read them, they want more.. They want the experiences like you had. That's why blogs are so effective. When people request info now.. and I call for an appt.. I had one guy ask, "How's your daughter? Is she doing better?" You can only do so much with websites, but blogs really get people interested because they see that you're a normal person with normal problems in your life.. Not just trying to sell them your programs.

I had asked about a blog earlier and got some very good advice about how to build one, but I'm also wondering about the 'DO's' and 'DON'T's' of blogging. Are there certain things that you should never put in a blog? Is there a site I can read the 'rules of etiqutte for blogging' or something along those lines?
And second, is there a major directory of people's blogs so that you can pick and choose what you want to read about without just typing something into the search bar?

Oh, sorry Joe, I clicked 'post' before I responded to your comment. I realize that I seem to sit on the fence quite frequently and do quite a bit more watching than I probably should, but chalk that up to old habits. Especially since I would certainly hate to commit a 'faux paux' before I even got started... but as you honestly seem to have the ability to offer sound advice everywhere I ask a question, I'm going to start using you as a 'template' sort-of, if you don't mind...starting with your own site/blog. I promise I won't copy, just take a peek to see what you've implemented.

Thanks, Joe. I do practice that Share With Others approach within my own realm of expertise, or whatever you want to call it. But in this field, I'm a baby. So it's very useful to see what others are doing and to learn from their successes and failures.
In my experience with the writing community, I have only 'met' one person who was deliberately cruel and unhelpful. Insulting actually.
But, in many cases, it only takes one person to quash the hopes and dreams of another.
Sharing what we've learned is the only way, in my opinion, to give back to each unique community on the internet. I can't pay for the advice you and others have offered freely on this board, Joe, but I will endeavor to 'Pass it On' if and when I meet someone who needs it. Thanks.

Yes.. If you look on other blogs we have blog directories that keyword search other blogs. And as for the Do's and Don't of blogging? Well.. I must say, I've read hundreds of blogs and I really don't see any boundaries.
Even yahoo and msn have their own places for anyone can blog

Thank you Philena, for your response as well. It seems as if, with every new 'fad' that comes along, and I'm talking about the internet in general here, that at first, it's all 'free' content... then, as time passes, regulations start popping up.
I'm curious as to how long it will be before blogs are monitored or required to post guidelines. Freedom of speech is one thing, and I realize we all have the option to click away if we don't like what we see...

I did just that... I see what you mean. I'd heard of a few of these incidents as independent news items, but taken together, I had to resist the urge to not glance over my own shoulder to see if Big Brother was watching me reading your blog...
It makes you wonder, doesn't it? Just who is it that decides where Freedom of Speech starts and ends???
