If you're site is generally a static (like a proxy site myspace-online.net/whatismyip.com/imageshack.us) site Here's how:
1. Research higher paying keywords which is relevant to your site.
2. Now ensure to put those keywords in your TITLE, Description, BODY, and in BOLD on the page at least once, mentioning about it.
3. I was earning a mere 12 cents per click at one point off my proxy sites, but I increased it to nearly 50 cents by researching better keywords.
Keep on experimenting, and post your results. I guarantee a better reality, and users will be more satisfied with results too.

But by the nature of the keywords being more competitive (leading to higher bid and payout price), wouldn't your chances of being found by SEs and visitors drops. Just how much? I don't know. I'm assuming that you'll change the keyword for the pages, etc... to optimize them for these new keywords.
Will this lead to more or less equal income? Again, I don't know. It's just something to consider.
Getting paid more per click is a great idea, but isn't that based on the assumption that the traffic will stay the same?
Maybe it might be worthwhile to consider aiming for the higher traffic, even with a little less PPC income, but then you can monetize the traffic with other methods (banner ads, referrals, etc...).
Just a thought. And I know I could have missed the mark completely. If I did, then my apologies for the confusion that this posting might have caused.

Very interesting. I get traffic from primarily myspace bulletins, so the optimization doesn't affect my traffic. On other sites, my traffic is from Search engines, so optimization can harm the amount of visitors.

Hello everyone!! I have learned so much about website promotion as far as forums, traffic exchanges, classifieds, etc. but I feel completely in the dark about adsense. If you have a completely generic website...like lets say a free website that you are given apart of a system. Do you have to submit that website to search engines and how do you know which key words to use? I know I really must be sounding like a newbie right now but I really would like to stop paying so much money in pay-per-clicks when I could put my website up there on search engines doing something else. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Finding high paying keywords will greatly increase your adsense revenue. If you use niche keywords you can get really good page rankings.

You may want to explore this new tool launched by Google for your keyword research. The url is https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
You can check the search volume and cost of each keyword on Google. And best part is it's free.

Well, I'm not sure about what you mean by a generic website, but submitting your site to the major search engines is always a great idea. Select the keywords according to your website focus, but also use the keyword tool suggested by Tricia.
