Hi all!
I keep reading how submitting articles/press releases is really great for your business...but, how do I do that?
Do I glean ideas from other articles? Kinda "copy" whatever they do without actually "copying" them, if you know what I mean?

i personally tend to write my own articles rather than copying others
When i submit mine i submit them to:
http://www.ezinearticles.com/
http://www.goarticles.com/
http://www.articlealley.com/
but there are many more and i find it is more beneficial to send to as many as possible as it spreads the article quicker and potentially you get more traffic.

Write articles on the subject of your website and topics you are interested in

Well...The main purpose of writing articles is to inform and educate your readers in your choosen industry. So if you're an expert in gardening for example, you'd write on subjects that could solve and help other gardeners issues and problems.
With the article, your sort of "priming the pump" as they say. Because your next goal is to get your reader to click your link in your source box to take them to your site (assuming that you have one to send them too).
I agree that sometimes coming up with topics is not the easiest thing to do. But I think if you always keep in mind that you're trying to offer a practical solution to a problem that someone has, it's a little easier to come up with stuff.
Just think of some problems you already tackled, and just simply write about that

Thanks for the great advice. Now...I wouldn't...say...write about a topic of interest unless it related to what I am marketing, right?

Yes. You're absolutely right. If you're marketing "baby cribs" for example (or whatever), You'd create informational articles around that theme that would really help people out. Themes like:
"6 things to know before you buy your crib"
"The safest place in your house to put the crib is...."
"The 5 latest dangers of owning a crib, and how you can avoid them"
Of course I'm just making stuff up, but I think you get the idea. You would simply apply the concept to whatever your marketing. People love free advice and useful information. And when you give them exactly that, you start to form a relationship with your prospects.
And they are more likely to trust what you have to say and eventually make a purchase from you.
That's the basic concept. Hope that helps.

For a start, you may want to buy articles from reliable source, or you can go to some articles directories. Pick some articles that are related to your interest and modified at least 80% of the original article. There, you will have a article of your own.

You could take bits and peices from the sales page or write about the price and benefits the consumer will get from purchasing the said product.

Article submitting is to create awareness for your business and to provide useful information to people. Do not follow the bad practice of submitting junk articles.
Article marketer can be a good start, since they help you to submit articles to part of their directories.

A great place to start in submitting articles is just going on google and typing in "submit your article" and pick all the ones that are free. It does help!

Like others said, you should write your own article because it will be original work of yours. Try to write article about things that you like or know a lot about.
But if you would like to write ariticle in order to sell products, your own product or as an affiliate, you may write your article in the form of product review. There will be no problem if you write a review of your own product. But as an affiliate, which mean you are selling someone else's product, this way you may have to buy that product as to know everything about it. So, you can write a good quality product review article since you know every details a lot more than it said in the selling page.
Well, you may have to pay a little, but think of it as your investment, right?

Then search the www using 'articles directory' to find the destination of your articles. Then submitt.

I use Article Marketer, which has worked tremendously well, I achieved page one results on google within two weeks after using them for the first time. (no exaggeration)
Ezinearticles.com is also very good.
I'm going to check out goarticles, and articlealley.
The other replies are really good solid advice.
The thing I like about Article Marketer is that the article coach will review your article, and give you feedback for things you should change to ensure your article is accepted by as many article directories as possible.
You can also pay a small fee to have the articles written for you, but I like writing my own, so that they echo my flavor and style.

I have a question about submitting articles and I did not see this question elsewhere in this thread.
My question is this: If I have written an article and submitted it to Ezine is it considered Kosher to submit that same article to other article sites such as goarticles or article marketer?
From what I understand it is good to submit articles to several of the article sites but I'm not sure I would want to write the same article several times with different wording.

Yea - this is perfectly acceptable. It's not necessarily advantageous to submit to hundreds of article directories, but a few is more than ok, even if they're the same.
Now - you may want to change-up your resource box, though as the articles may get picked up by third party websites (from the article directories) & varying your linking strategies are a good idea (different links, different anchor text, etc).

Thats really not the way to go about it. We should not be encouraging paraphrasing of other's work to prevent being caught plaigerising outright. If you truly know what you are talking about (and lets face it you get further marketing things you are passionate about and passion equals knowledge) you shouldn't need to copy someone else's article.
You can purchase articles for a penny a word or less on many sites. And many of them are even well done thoughtful articles. I encourage you to seek out someone to pay $5 or less for a 500 word article if you find you cannot write your own.
I write articles for others, and even without retaining copyright I would be ticked if someone copied my article to use for themselves.

I love ezinearticles.com The only problem is that you have to have your own website, not just an affiliate link. You can have an affiliate link with goarticles.com Just make sure you spend some time finding the right keywords to build your article around.
You want to find keywords related to your product that have a high search count and low (relatively speaking) competition.
Also use the same keywords and go to Squidoo.com and Hubpages.com and write articles on those as well.
