SEO stands for search engine optimization. basically it means re-jigging your web-site to get higher up the search engine rankings when people search for related terms and content to afford the best opportunity for placement on the Search Engines. Once a keyword list has been compiled, the site is optimized to rank well for the targeted keywords. It's an interesting game, ever changing ever evolving. Search Engine Optimization basically involves fine tuning the content of your site along with the HTML and Meta tags and also involves appropriate link building process. The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL and Ask Jeeves.

Here's another definition: SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a website on search engines via organic search results for targeted keywords.

A basic overview of website SEO is..
Know your target
Keywords and Content, Locations (Local)
If you choose National or world wide, you would need a lot of SEO work, unless your chosen niche is hardly used.
Once you have this done, it is time to perform on page seo via altering the text on your pages, title/meta/alt/image tags and the CSS/Div names. MAke your site so that it uses php and has a seperate header and footer, this makes life a lot easier.
Submit your site to the main search engines and some of the free ones. Create a worpress blog (ideally install one on your own site) greate keyword rich title and content that links to your site, also make a link from your site to it.
Create some more free blogs and link to each other and your main site/blog, add images and alt tags.
The list can go on and on, it depends on how far you can and want to go with SEO.
Hope this helps
