I've used ZenOK Free Antivirus for months. It comes with anti spyware, among other useful tools to keep it safed. it's very fast and for me the best antivirus software.

I use Avast, with no problems at all. I have used McAfee, Norton and they BOTH SUCKED! They bog down the computer really bad. I like simplicity and Avast has given me that.

To each his/her own

I have used kaspery in the past it was ok,AVG worked but I must say it slowed down my system a little bit. I have also used Avira, It was very good.
Just remember not all of the free programs i mentioned have a built in firewall! so a seperate free firewal software like zone alarm is needed in conjunction with your antivirus package.

Personally I prefer norton 360(using latest version which is 4 at the time of writting)
Though it is not cheap and it may slow my system down a little bit, It has been outstanding keeping me safe online. You got to ask yourself how much damage will be done If someone compromised your system (whether a hacker or virus) to me my whole life can be over as i do EVERYTHING online so i can't compromise on security.
That doesn't mean that Free options aren't bad however.

Taz

I agree with Matt and Solid42, AVG seems to be the av that runs the lightest in the background. I've used their different softwares for some time now, avg free, avg spyware, etc. I've recently been recommended avg threatlabs. Apparently if you visit a site for the first time or if you're just curious you can enter its address at www.avgthreatlabs.com and it will tell you if it's safe or not. I think it's a nice little extra to be added to the list of malware or spam scanners that complement an av.

In all my experience, I love both AVG and Kaspersky. I currently use Kaspersky but would also recommend AVG for those looking for a free antivirus. You just can't beat AVG when it comes to free antivirus software.

Kaspersky does slow my computer during certain tasks but I believe that any av program will do that when it is checking everything coming into your computer in real time.

I don't know if AVG actually checks for incoming threats in real time better than Kaspersky but I do know that I have never had a virus since switching to Kaspersky Internet Security.

When I got my first personal computer, I did not have any qualms about it and just openly accepted Norton AV. I later learned that it uses a lot of memory which makes your system exert too much which in turn will lag other processes. The same goes for McAfee, which loads to long. Then I came across nod32 and avg which were so-so because you had to like do stuff manually wherein I am not so good at. But when I was introduced to Avira I liked it because it was user-friendly and light enough for my other computer programs to run simultaneously with it. So now I am sticking with it.

I am currently using Avast and it has worked well for me! I don't have to pay anything, because i use the free version! Even though it is free, it has stopped some virus's from infecting my computer!

My wife turned me on to AVG a few years ago. We've been using it ever since then.

I also agree that Avast is great and also it's FREE! I used a paid version of Norton before I made the switch to Avast, and quite honestly it seems to work better than what I was paying for. For ultra protection, I use Avast combined with Spybot.

I vote for AVG. I have used the free version for several years. Last year when I had to buy a new laptop it came with Norton, and I felt like it was running slower then it should be (especially considering it was new!). When my subscription came up fro renewal in April, I switched over to AVG. And the whole time Norton kept reminding me that I was 'at risk'! *gasp!* Seemed a little dramatic to me. I uninstalled and decided if I was going to pay for an antivirus to go for the AVG. Haven't looked back since!
