So I have basically attended two different MLM seminar/meetings, one of which I have joined membership (then ignored because I didn't understand/distractions interfered/lack of knowledge @ the time) and one that I am currently trying to analyze and understand. I have swung from a skeptical of MLM to an optimist MLM on my own with no persuasion from any of the two companies representatives.
I just recently started reading books about success, like Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and listening to significant financial advisers like Robert T. Kiyosaki. These books and cds/dvds have opened my eyes to see life from a different aspect and I've seen progress in my academic performance since then. The relationship between my life and the stories/wisdom shared in the book have perfect correlation due to my own personal experiences which is why I think it has played such a big roll with decisions I make and the perspective of which I see opportunity and success today but seeking truth of the matter for my situation, college student with limited funds but strong aspirations for a real business.
By now you probably think I am just a college student looking for easy money which is half-way true but let me inform you that I come from a family that works hard and I do know that money doesn't come easy unless hard work is paid in exchange, give to get concept. Although I may not have my BSTM degree in college yet, I do wish to retire early just as these MLM companies promise + veteran MLM's in those companies preach while I chip away at graduating in the process of building a solid downline of MLM pupils under me. I'm sorry if I use the term "downline" improperly but I just joined a few minutes ago and read only 3 posts and am only assuming it means the people that "one" would mentor for the MLM company. If not, that's how I will be using it in my context. I know a lot of the time the meetings are where the connections are made but aside from that is it possible to find people outside of the meetings? If so, what are some good books or strategies I can look into or read for that?
By comparing the two MLM companies attitudes the concepts are exactly the same, residual/royalty income will come in if you promote the service, sell products that the company has retail/direct sales connections with + MLM education materials and at the same time be a mentor to those under you for doing the same exact, leading by example with benefits/promotions by meeting certain deadlines/requirements. It does sound simple in summary by the high rank mentors and successors of the MLM companies but the reality to me is that it is very time consuming which is why I am stuck in between really committing to one I like while attending college without interfering with my studies, not to mention my finances would be leached off of by parents who would be willing to support the cause if I was serious about one. Please let me know if I'm missing anything in my summary as of what I think a Network/Multi-Level Market is. That is just my observation and what I have heard, with some minor twists of info because my memory retention is short.
I am stuck between two MLM's both have great products, one is telecomm, the other is beauty/hygiene/computers. I don't know if I can mention the company names but I'm sure if you know your MLM companies, you would automatically know which of the two I'm talking about.
Any information about MLM to help me make a better educated decision would help me so much, I do believe in the system, I just need to know how to approach the whole thing so I can have a plan or know what to specialize my knowledge in.

Also another question would be, when can I trust an upline member? As of right now to the new MLM rep I am talking to it seems like he's playing mind games by encouraging my own motivation on my perspective on life because of the books I read and whole thought process, am I being to analytical? If these questions seem too elementary I apologize and am only trying to learn more about the opportunity of MLM as a whole to help benefit my dream. I see the whole MLM as an advantage over my generation of people (20-30 yr olds)and would like a head start over those who don't know anything about it because it seems like none of my friends embrace the concept of it while I see the whole functionality of it.

Personally, I'm not involved with any MLMs because of some of the reasons you mentioned: going to meetings and that kind of thing can be very time consuming. If it is paying off to do that sort of thing, then you are using your time wisely, but if you are spending all of this time on it for months on end and not earning money, and this is interfering with your grades at school, then I think its time to move on...

well MLM require a lot of conversation to pursue people to join. but it's still a good opportunities to do

In MLM you get out of it what you put into it. If you commit time and energy on a consistent basis you can make it work part-time.
The big pros to starting a MLM is you gain experience in marketing, sales, lead generation, prospecting, training, teamwork and the money can be very nice too.
Every company looks good when you are seeing the opportunity in a company meeting and everyone says they have the best comp plan.
In the grand scheme of things the product is only a small part of the success equation. You can have the best product in the world and fail miserably if the product is badly priced or the compensation plan is weak or the timing is off then you are fighting an uphill battle.
There are a couple of telecomm companies but I assume you are talking about the largest one. The residual part of comp plan takes forever to build because 1) the payout % is incredibly low on your personal recruits and the levels closest to you and 2) to qualify for the deeper levels of the residuals you need to have a large customer base. The plan is heavily weighted to reward the people who have already reached the top, but make it difficult for new people to create a profitable business.

Success in mlm, networking, or any other business isn't necessarily going to be easy but it doesn't have to be hard either. The key is learning how to market and prospect to the right people and the right places. It's a numbers game (but any business is a numbers game). Some will, some won't, so what, next person.

I agree with the above statements. Having a good
system in place and being organized also helps.
A good place to learn is www.danijohnson.com.
There are tons of recorded calls to learn how to
recruit (if that is what you want to do), learn what
it takes for people to follow you, etc.
Also, finding a company with cooperative
marketing helps as you are able to purchase
the customers and receive the lifetime rights
from all of their purchases. This keeps you
motivated as you will be paid the first month
you are in this business.

With MLM you are almost always going to be given step-by-step instructions. It is VERY IMPORTANT to follow their "action plan". Usually the MLM company already knows what works and what doesn't for their product. If you put in at least a couple of hours everyday of focused marketing (whatever your plan suggests) you will slowly begin to see results. MLM really does work, you just have to stay focused, dedicated and the hardest part sometimes is just to stay motivated. Just keep going, because once you begin to see results, it slowly begins to snowball!

I second what Becky said about danijohnson.com and actually if you are going to do mlm, you need to go to her First Steps to Success seminar.
You will be rocked at what you will learn there that will not only help you with your mlm business but ANY personal or business relationships. (many brick and mortar business owners, bankers, realtors, etc go to her seminars and skyrocket their businesses after that )
Have a long term goal in place -like where you want to be in ten years from now, instead of a goal for next month ....

Whoever said any of this is easy. What sets MLM giants and Internet Marketing Gurus apart from everyone else is they were willing to do the work. If it was easy, we would all be skinny, rich and happy! Do the work now, and enjoy the fruits later. There is no better business in the world than working for yourself, and making the kinda of money others just dream of.
