mytreasures:
How did you get connected with United Way? I supposed I could simply call them and ask if they have an upcoming fundraiser. And, perhaps I could purchase two of several items from the discount catalog so that I would have "cash & carry" to offer. And I would also have the items from my display that have been retired. Most of my retired items are new and never worn, as I'm a newcomer. I LOVE being a Silpada Consultant and I know that I have to continue stepping out of my "comfort" zone to reach more people to host shows for me. I'm just wondering if the summer is a more relaxed / down time for us Silpada sisters. I'm guessing the holiday season is the busiest. Have you ever had a month without a show?

Hello again mytreasures!
One of my good customers is strongly affiliated with a group of ladies who do this annual fundraiser for the United Way and she called me and personally invited me to participate. I did well by taking orders that day but like I said in a previous post, at most "events" people are more interested in purchasing cash and carry items./

Yes, I have definitely had months without a show. December is very slow for all Silpada reps but other than that, September through February are our busiest. Things typically do slow down a bit for me during the summer months but that's because I don't work at it as hard. I honestly believe that if I was faithful in following up with customers, I could have a few shows every month of the year except for December. December is bad because after the first few days, we cannot guarantee Christmas delivery.

I'm still deciding what pieces to order from the new gorgeous catalog but I can already tell all of you that my two favorite pieces are the square bangle and also the hammered bangle with the 4 mother of pearl accent stones on it!

hello abuckigal...I am new to this forum so I apologize if I don't do this exactly right..lol..I am getting ready to become a rep with Silpada and I started out wanting to host a party which is in a couple of weeks, but once I started really looking at the perks of being a rep I have decided to become one. I have a meeting with the girl that is supposed to do my party tomorrow and have told her I want to discuss becoming a rep. I am wanting to get the most jewelry for my buck and also allow my closest friends and relatives that attend my party to book a party with me. I guess my question is when you are hosting a party can you also be partly the rep as well. I know my rep will be there but I am wanting to reap the benefits of anyone booking a party, seeing that these people are who I would be contacting after I got established anyway. Thanks so much for you time!

Hi Billie,

I am new to this forum and am also thinking about becoming a Silpada Designs Rep., and love this forum - so glad I found it.
I have a question, I am concerned about what you do with your retired pieces, can you tell me a little about what you do. I know you can sell them off the table. Are they hard to sell? They do not have the warranty, do you explain this to the customer? Does Silpada have a catalog with retired pieces they sell when the new catalog comes out? Thank you for your time and your knowledge.

(I'm thinking there must be a page missing from these posts cause this question above is dated Sept 22 and is showing as one of the newest posts and yet I KNOW I as well as others have posted since then.)

Ok, to answer your question. Yes, you can be the rep as well as the hostess at your own party. You would need to submit your contract before your first party and then your party would be the launch of your new business where you would earn the commissions from that party as well as future bookings.

Since your party is already booked with another rep you could either postpone your party and tell her you want to sign up and then be the rep of your own party OR.....you could let her have the commissions from your party but you would take any and all bookings from your party since you plan to sign up under her. She should be glad to do it that way. HTH!

I have an open house at the end of July every year where I invite all my customers and hostesses from the past and I even encourage them to bring a friend. I tell them to come and pick up their new catalog and shop my inventory which is ALL on sale. I sell the retired pieces for 50% discount as cash and carry (no credit cards). I do not charge tax or shipping. I also offer everything else on my table at 25% off. If they buy something that I love and it's not retiring, I just reorder it either on a show or as part of my 50% discount jewelry order. I typically have a very good turnout for this event however I still always have pieces left over. Sometimes I will donate one of them to a charitable event or give it as a gift. I also take these pieces to parties that I do and after everybody has partied and placed their order, I bring out my tray of retired pieces and let them know that they can purchase those items at 50% off. Sometimes it takes a long time to finally sell all of the retired pieces but I usually get it done.

As for the lifetime warranty, I tell my customers at my open house that their purchase does not include the lifetime warranty since they did not purchase the item directly from Silpada. But.....I also tell them that as long as I am a rep and their item breaks, I will have it replaced. (I just have to do it under my name since I am the one who originally purchased it from Silpada).

Silpada does come out with a catalog of the soon to be retiring pieces usually in June or early July. (The list is also available online and I usually just print it) These pieces are never offered by Silpada at a sale/discount price. The purpose of the catalog is just to let customers know that this might be their last chance to get a piece that they love. Silpada will continue to allow you to order retired pieces as long as the inventory lasts. Availability of a particular piece can be found online.

Please answer two questions for me - anyone who can!
1) I have a catalog I got from a rep that says "You've Got the look!" and it says "When you first become a Silpada Representative, your first look* is included! *Looks valued up to $212. Is this true?? When do you get it?
2) I heard if you order a certain amount of inventory the $199 fee is reduced and then eliminated altogether if you order enough. I am thinking of investing $2000 initially and want to be very clear on what to expect. My rep is of no help, she didn't even know how to fill out the order form!!!!

Your first statement is true. When you sign up to become a rep (at the cost of $199), you get to choose a 3 piece jewelry set valued at up to $212 as part of your sign up kit. So in reality, it's almost like signing up for free if you really loved those pieces and would like to have them.

Part 2 of your statement is no longer true. Silpada used to discount your sign up fee if you purchased a certain amount of half price jewelry. The 3 piece set that now comes with your sign up fee replaced that discount.

Billie,

You seem to be the "queen" of this discussion. I've read through (almost) all the posts and am impressed by your honesty and straight forward answers. Silpada should be proud of you.

I've read in previous posts that the rep's commission is 30% of sales. I am going to play dumb (not always a stretch for me) and ask if my examples here are correct:

Show #1
Total Sales of $1,200
Commission = $360

Show #2
Total Sales of $880
Commission = $264

Show #3
Total Sales of $2,100
Commission = $630

Does Silpada issue a check to the rep, or can they do a direct deposit into a bank account? How long does it typically take to get the commission once the rep has entered the sales into the Silpada website?

Finally, how is the income reported for tax purposes? Do you just report the commission, or total sales? Does Silpada provide a 1099 form? And does it include what you earn through your "downline" reps?

I ask all this because my sister is interested, but I usually do her taxes for her.

Thanks!

All of your calculations are correct. The Silpada rep takes 30% off the top and then pays the rest to Silpada. Every rep I know has direct deposit into a checking account that is typically set up only for your Silpada business. So, let's say that all my customers paid by credit card (by the way, Silpada pays the credit card fees ). Then the show would be overpaid by 30% so Silpada will put that 30% due to you into your checking account. You will usually see this deposit within 2-3 days after they process the order.

In the case where customers pay you directly by check or cash, then you will owe Silpada 70% of retail sales when you close the show. It's just so much easier if you can tell them to withdraw the funds from your bank account. You can also charge any amount you owe them to a credit card.

All Silpada reps are self employed and are responsible for keeping their own records for tax purposes. It's best to stay on top of this each week/month etc. You can't just take 30% of all sales and count it as income because lots of those sales will probably be discounted to family members or even to yourself so you are not earning commission on that sale. Maybe you did a home show and you added an order that your sister placed and you sold to her at your cost. Your income on that show would not be 30% of the total sales since one person's order was discounted. I think it's easiest to keep some sort of spread sheet that you can keep running and updating throughout the year showing what your profits and expenses were

Silpada does not send a 1099 but they do send another form (can't remember the form#) stating that you purchased or earned more than $5,000 from them. That's all it says. It does not give specific dollar amounts because Silpada has no idea how much money you actually earned since you are permitted to discount anytime you want to. Discounting is another whole topic......remember, once you offer a customer a discount, they will always want it! I only discount to my daughters and my mom and then once a year I have a black Friday sale where I offer 25% off. I don't earn hardly anything but I am the hostess on the order so I get the free jewelry!

I looked into Silpada a while back. Really beautiful products are offered, which is great since they sell themslves well. I just dislike the home party platform.

LOL Mom, well then I guess you're reading the wrong forum!

If you like the products, you can always place a single order with a Silpada Rep or if you don't want to open your home to do a home party, you could collect orders from your friends and submit it as a catalog show where you would still be considered the hostess and you would earn the free jewelry. You definitely don't want to become a rep yourself if you dislike home parties because that is the heart of our business.

Happy new year!

Hey, my posts are some of the ones missing! That's odd - I wonder how they got deleted. That must be why I haven't been getting notifications when this thread was updated.

Just wanted to clarify here - the 3 piece set that comes with the sign up fee did not replace that discount. That set replaced the $200 in free jewelry you earned with your first qualified party.

There is still an incentive for purchasing a certain amount of jewelry, but it's no longer a discount on your certification fee. Now, it's a 3-piece set of items to use in your display as well as a bin to carry your items to parties and a great jewelry "roll" that holds a ton of jewelry. You get it for free when you spend $2000 at your cost on jewelry when you sign up. (So, $4000 worth of jewelry).

My new rep just did this and it was awesome. I went to her house to help her set up and brought lots of table display items, but we used very few of them, because everything looked great with what Silpada sent her. She was really excited when she saw everything she received.

Ah, guess what? The posts are missing because the server crashed during the fall and the backups were 2 months old! Posts and even accounts (including mine) were lost. What a shame! Glad to be back and glad more of this wonderful discussion wasn't lost as well.
