Hi guys.

I made a bit of a noob mistake (feel free to mock me haha), I think. I'll get right to the point...

I have a wordpress that I wish to get hosted, so that I can use Adsense, etc. May have made a mistake, see... I used damnx.us , and purchased the , em... domain transfer. Wrong move, aye? The reason I thought I made an error, is due to it being a free wordpress, and I do not own the domain.

Been looking all over for answers, the site I went for the transfer with has nothing at all listed on their "knowledge base". I got in touch with someone from the site, they left me the following response:

Hello,

Thanks to be with us.
Nothing to worry.

1. We forgot to update our system - now the domain transfer charge is $10.75
Anyway, we will do the job for you.

2. Domain transfer is a manual job because it requires domain's secret password. We sugggest you to visit our own website http://www.idnrs.com sign-up and select domain transfer, complete all the process except the final payment. We will manually fix the bill/invoice.

3. We noticed that instead domain transfer, you want to host your domain with us.
No problems. We will cancel your domain transfer request if this is the case.
Please goto https://www.damnx.us/order.php and place the order for Linux Shared Basic plan. Please pay for this. We will cancel your previous order and you will get full refund.

Once again thanks and regards,
Support Team"

Sorry for the wall of text, I am just utterly confused here. Probably not helping that I am overly annoyed, lol. Could someone please help this noobian out? Also, I do apologize if this is in the wrong section. The idea here is I wish to keep my wordpress, seeing its already been worked on, and I got some attention from Google... which will probably not matter if moved, right? Anyway, I planned to maybe add a link on the existing wordpress blog, to the new one.

2 steps.
Download (export) your WordPress database to your hard drive.
Choose a domain name and a hosting package (damnx? scary name).

When your new domain is active install WordPress and import your database.

May be easier said than done for a newbie but it really isn't complicated.

Thanks, Just. Yeah, I just got worried because I paid through one company, and then when I went to log in, I got directed to another.. then one more. It was weird. Now I cannot get in touch with the person that was responding to me. First there were fast replies, now it's ... nada.

Hm, I actually do have a domain name already paid for, which I paid for to experiment. thisisournet.com, lol its pretty pathetic. Going to the link, everything is all screwed up. I tired to upload to the server via the CP, and got, well, what you see when you go to said .com.

What do you think about placing a link on the existing wordpress, to the new domain? Will I get nailed from Google for having the same content, or? Hmm... lots of homework to do.

Also, I love this site.Never have I gotten faster replies, from nicer people. Not many , it would seem, have much patience for noobs. Thanks.

thisisournet.com

LOL, I see what you mean about screwed up but the name is catchy enough.
Oh, the irony, Google has indexed all your PHPBB install files as content.
If you want to install WordPress there instead it should be in your CPanel.
If you just want to fix the bulletin board then you need "permission".
ie: you don't have permission to access the database on your server.
That could be just a matter of username/password or not allowed.

Did you try to install it by uploading it or was it supplied in your CPanel.
Most hosting packages nowadays come with all the install packages.
If you use the built in installs it will set the dbase permissions for you.

Actually, I uploaded files to the file manager. The first time I did it, I used a forum package, er whatever... and it looked... funny? lol Wierd, I could see SOME of the forum, ut it still looked funny, so I messed with it. And by "mess with it", I mean it got all screwed up lol. Thanks, you mean thisisournet, or? If so, yeah. I figured hell, I am young... annoyed with the way things are going, so why not create a site where I , possibly others, could whine about it. Not very original, I know lol.

I just wanted my OWN thing to complain, share ideas, etc. I can't help it if I am loud, it's got to be the Irish in me. haha. Coming from Ireland when I was so young, I've got that American in me as well. Oi vey, huh?

Annnyway, now I have hosting from HostGator, just have to sort it all out. This shouldnt be so difficult, and I know I am making it so. Theres no way in hell I am this slow lol.

Ugh, I'll go mess with the CP now, see if I cant figure this out. As annoying as it can get, I love this stuff. Just hope I do not get so obsessed that when it is finally done, I stand with my chest out and find out I no longer even want to run a site lol.

Domain servers in listed order:
NS3009.HOSTGATOR.COM
NS3010.HOSTGATOR.COM

From godaddy/whois
.....

Domain servers in listed order:
NS01.000WEBHOST.COM
NS02.000WEBHOST.COM

From whois.net

Perhaps I am being impatient here? I went ahead already and took care of directing the name severs 1 & .2, was just a little puzzled when I got two different listings as displayed above. Any thoughts? I also went ahead and sorted out how to install WordPress via Fantastico, and then SMF for the forums. Hm.

The GoDaddy WhoIs is the current one, patience grasshopper.
Congrats on figuring out Fantastico, much easier way to install.
Just keep taking baby steps and soon you will be running.

I did it, finally. http://thisisournet.com/Wordpress/

That is the wordpress page I just got going. Was trying to redirect my wordpress.com page to my new url, but apparently I must pay them (wordpress) to do so. Will this effect Google at all? I mean will they see my content and then see its on my wordpress.com hosted one?

Ive gotten decent enough traffic, imo anyway. So I wanted to redirect. Think its worth it? I was thinking I spent a lot of time with the SEO part, got it recognized. Was hoping not to have to start over... no biggie if I must.

Oh, and i learned how to manipulate the index.html of my domain. It's all new to me, didnt read up on it just kept my browser open, and the folder for my site, and edited and saved to my folder, then just reload the site. This is AWESOME lol. God my gf thinks Im such a geek, but happy that I sorted it out and that Im learning how to do it.

backdoor method
You could slip a HTML re-direct in each page at WP instead of redirecting the URL.
That would leave the content there while making your domain the destination.
After a while the new site should be ranking and you can close the old WP one.

Hm, so having the exact same content as my old WP would not matter? I was thinking I could explain that its my WP, thats why it looks , well, is exactly alike. Obviously I'll add more content.

Haha, I was going to ask if there was a "backdoor" method, wasnt sure if any would have an issue with me asking that. Thanks friend! I'll give it a shot.

I've already got a couple people to build sites for. And yes I did just start all this, but it's just so easy to manipulate a template. Eventually I'm hoping to start from scratch, and get really good. Got to start at the bottom, though. Learn all the terminology. I figure the best place to start when learning anything is with the grammar.

Mind if I keep this thread open? Maye easier to just do that because any question will be fairly relevant. And it would be nice to keep this alive so I can see my progress.

btw, how do you like my avatar? lol

I don't. I mean I don't like that it is needed.
Isn't tomorrow(Jan 18th) blackout day?
Guess we won't be seeing you then.

Yeah, neither do I. But it's the reality of things, as some see it anyway. I'm not trying to be a wiseguy.

Hm, another issue I am having. On my new site, I cannot figure out where to edit another page of it. For example: sitename.com/otherpage. I can easily edit the main page, just can't seem to find, what I think would be another index.html. There are no such files. Make sense? I am not editing via Cpanel. Just editing the files I have on my pc, which are then saved to the server, when I edit/save the index.html in the main page folder. Hope all that makes some sense.

Ha, just a couple weeks ago I had no clue how to do this. Then I started to realize that in order to learn anything properly, one has to learn the grammar of whatever is being learned. Obvious though, right? Its just odd to me that most of my life I found things difficult to learn, to retain knowledge. And now I am just finding out that it was not that I am "stupid", but I failed to go out learning incorrectly. These easy steps really do make learning ANYTHING, a lot easier. 1. Grammar 2. Processing information. 3. if you get good enough, then there is the rhetoric part. That is to say, explaining to others in a way to help out in the education process. Weird, how in schools we are taught what we think is "how to think, to learn". Really, all they teach, in the public sector, is how to repeat what is taught. Public schools need to teach the proper way, free thought., more critical thinking. Less repeating. I mean like, to question. To investigate anything and everything. I actually noticed this very early on. And now, oddly enough, it is confirmed by some very wise teachers. Is this all just that obvious, and I missed it? Sorry for rambling, I've got so many questions.

Doesn't sound like you missed it, the most obvious are the least perceived.
I was fortunate to be taught to research instead of rote learning which I suck at.
Anything you want to know is available if you just know how and where to look.
Most people just don't ask the right questions to get the answers they want.

Back to the subject at hand...
You have an index file only in directories, one per directory.
You can have dozens of .html or .php files(pages) in a directory.
You have an index.php in your /Wordpress directory. (.../.../Wordpress/index.php)
If you were to insert an index.html in there it would over-ride the .php
.htm over-rules .html in some browsers, specifically microsoft products.
The browser looks for .htm, then html, then php, first up gets displayed.
INDEX was intended to have an actual index to the other pages in a directory.
Every directory should have a page named index (or not, but that's another story).
You must be confused by now, I know I am.

Ok, so... I'd go about editing a page how? I mean as in how it looks, etc. Such as, for example, making links on other pages bold using
<b> text </b>? Im not sure how to edit a page as I would by editing the index.html. :/

Using an Editor of course! Ha.
I usually use my browser's editor (SeaMonkey Composer).
You can use WordPad or NotePad if you just want to edit the html.
A composer/editor like SeaMonkey has WYSIWYG plus a text/tag editor.
And built in FTP so you can view a page, click edit, then publish it again.
Some people use Komposer (outdated) or OpenOfficeWriter (good editor).
I prefer SeaMonkey because I learned on Netscape Composer last century.
Netscape sold to AOL then the Mozilla guys created FireFox and SeaMonkey.
Ramblin? who me?

Sorry, not what I mean.

I am asking which file do I edit. i.e. sitename/otherpage.com

The main folder/site page I can get into , the index.html, and edit just fine. I just cannot figure out which file to edit, on other pages.

haiden:
sitename/otherpage.com

No such file.

try: sitename.com/otherpage.html or sitename.com/subdirectory/index.html

Just2EZ:
ask the right questions to get the answers

The answer is easy, it's the question that's hard.

The other page is named "Wordpress", so I have checked sitename.com/Wordpress, no html file. Nor in any other part of any other folder. The only one that has an index html, is for the main page. HWOCA N THIS BE? I am so utterly lost. :/

I'll just keep investigating. It couldnt be named something else, right? I mean there must be an html file.

Oh and I meant othersite.html, dunno why I put .com

NVMND, I got it. There is no index html file, yet the other page loads... so... I figured out that I can just copy the source from the other page, paste it into an index.html, in the pages folder, and it works. NOW IC AN EDIT IT.

God, this is (better than sex). *watches out for gf) :P

Huh? That other page should be sitename.com/Wordpress/index.php
Wordpress' index page is index.php, not html.
Told you I was confused, now double that.

p.s. you edit Wordpress pages using WordPress, not with an editor.
