I must admit i have done it and i made a bit of money but not enough to earn a living! But i believe if you learn enough about it and can get the traffic to your site it can make a nice a amount of income alongside other techniques of IM.

I've made some money with Adsense, but I've found that affiliate programs pay a lot more.

You have to get a massive amount of traffic to get any decent money out of Adsense. I think that if you are selling affiliate products you should never put adsense on your page, as it drives visitors away instead of to your products.
Some people post sites specifically designed to get Adsense traffic. This can be done, but you have to be careful about violating the terms of use agreement. You need to have some pretty fantastic content and traffic to make this work. Also it is rumored that the click payout is determined by your page rank. In other words a new site will only get a few pennies, but site with a high page rank will get much more.

That's an interesting proposition. Any idea where you heard about it? I haven't heard about it myself, but it is certainly possible. There may be several algorithmic factors in determining Adsense payout and that may be one of them.
I do know that payout is determined by what Google calls a "Quality Score". Relevancy plays a big part as does CTR.
I've dabbled in Adsense a bit. Though my quality score was high, it didn't really pay too well.
You'd need a high quality score, good content, and a lot of traffic to make Adsense worth your while.

There is an art and a science in regards to placing and tweaking Adsense. It pays to study it before you implement it on a site.
There's only one way to find out - read up on it and experiment. I'd advise against using it on your home page as that tends to be a turn-off.
Vishal and Happywife can probably comment further on this one.
Affiliate links tend to pay out the highest.

It's not true! I have a related site with zero PR but the click through rates are better than this forum. I think a lot depends on how focused the content is on the keyword you are targeting.

I agree. It also depends on what the advertisers are paying for those particular keywords. You are only ever going to get the mysterious Google percentage, not more. You may get less depending on the number of ads on your page, which one was clicked on, etc.
I don't stress over it. I put it on the pages I feel it is appropriate, in the locations that I was taught are the most effective - above the fold, and I'm cutting back to only 2 ad units per page. (I've got some renovations to do). Other than that, I don't get too worked up about it.
If I know a product/service is very high converting then I wouldn't want to let it compete with Adsense for the click, but some of what I promote (chocolate candy) doesn't always have a high conversion rate. I'd rather get something from Adsense then nothing from a drooling dreamer.
I'm not an expert. Some people don't like to mix their Adsense with their affiliate links. If what you are doing is working for you, then stick with it. If not, try something different. Live and learn.

Agreed with Vishal and happywife. Content is king. With good content, traffic will come. Eventually there will be enough people click on those ads.

How can you tell which sites are making you money from Adsense? I currently have Adsense on two blogs, and today I received one click for $0.73...In the reports, I cannot see where the click came from. Any ideas?

If you use a good keyword tool you can easily see what the bids are for certain keywords. It IS better however to calculate the volumes rather than high amounts.
Adsense success depends on site building. If you keep building many sites on popular keywords and offering good content, over time you will see good results. Some people use templates to speed up this process and use ghost writers to re-write articles/content. It really is a numbers game you can't get too caught up in one or two sites. You also need to continually test what works best such as placement.
Finally adsense should part of a larger package of income streams. The above comment on not having affiliate and adsense on the same page is worth thinking about-thanks.

Hi Kecia,
It helps to set up Adsense channels and to tweak around in advanced reporting within the Adsense Reports tab.
Furthermore, most hosting programs come with a back end visitor tracking program such as AWStats.
You can also find and use other stats reporting programs, some of which can help you determine which hyperlinks have been clicked on which pages. Advanced tracking programs can even track a visitor path from entrance through site exit.
Often times a visitor will enter one page and exit via Adsense click from another page.
The things you already have in place should be of help. See if you can't figure it out between your Adsense stats and back end hosting account stats else research the net to try to find an additional script that will do what you are looking for. If you feel you are up to it, you can study Google Analytics to see if that may be what you're looking for.

Channels will tell you the click is come from which site. Another great tool is Google Analytics. GA report can tell you almost everything you want to know: Where the visitors come from, country, state, city; which page they landed and exited; how they get here, i.e. through referral link or direct; how long they stay at your site; etc.

Adddsensss is good for covering minor expenses. But would not bet on earning for a living, unless you really know what you are doing.
