I have a question. I'm a newbe and I want to upload a avatar. I have chosen a .gif image of 60 X 60 pixels large, so I know it's not too big. The problem is- I can't upload the thing. Do I need to remotely store the image somewhere (Like photobucket). Once I do that, there's noplace to paste the url of the picture.

The avatar has to be exact 80x90px (WxH) and less than 10KB, else you'll not be able to upload it. If you need help, you can send the original (un-resized) pic to me and I'll upload it.

There was a site that I found on Google that actually re-sized my image to 80x90px which is a requirement here in the forum for uploading a picture of yourself.

I don't remember that site's name but it can be done.

I thought the pic I used was accepted, but I didn't know anything about it needing to be certain dimensions.

Turns out I didn't have the avatar. Glad I checked out this thread.

    Here's how I fixed it.

I had already downloaded the irfanview tool at irfanview.com

So I opened it. Cicked FILE. Navigated to the picture on my hard drive.

    Clicked IMAGE

    Clicked RESIZE / RESAMPLE

Kept the setting in the PIXEL default button

UNchecked the KEEP ASPECT RATIO BOX

Typed in 80 in the width box

Typed in 90 in the height box

    Clicked OK

Then to save it I clicked FILE again

    Clicked SAVE AS

Navigated to the folder on my hard drive where I wanted to save it

Changed the name of the file to differentiate between the original

    Clicked SAVE

Then I uploaded that new picture here in the forum

Now I actually have the avatar that I was so unobservant
that I thought I already had here.

Chris Farrell turned me on irfanview. I learned so much from
that cat, it ain't even funny. I used to have a mental block that said I couldn't learn skills, but I'm over it now.

Sometimes it takes me longer than average to learn, but I can learn.

Irfanview can do so much more than resize. It's fun to play around with it. You can crop pictures to blow up certain sections. You can create all kinds of effects.

You can add writing. Paint over sections.

One thing I used it for was an image for something I promote that said, "CLICK HERE" at the bottom. I wanted to use it as the top photo on a Squidoo lens, which is the only one you can't link...(so the "Click Here" wasn't apprpropriate.)

With irfanview I was able to paint in the bottom section that said Click Here and then write in something more appropriate.

I have the same question last time but I posted it as a shout out/status. I'll just go ahead and follow the instructions and be back and see whether my avatar will work ;)

The earlier instructions no longer apply now. The avatar need not be a of 80 x 90px size now. It can be any size but it needs to be below 30kb.
