Body By Vi is right. Backlinks are how many websites are actually linking back to yours. You actually don't promote these links in the manner that you are thinking, but you want to build the number of these links that you actually have. Like Vi said, the more sites that are linking back to yours, the more visible you are to the search engine bots (like Google), and the higher your site ranks in searches for Keywords related to your site. One way you can build backlinks is to read blogs that are related to your website, and comment on the entries. You want to leave thoughtful comments, not just simply agree with what they have said, and PLEASE don't spam with a link back to your opportunity. Usually these blogs have a profile you will fill out to comment, and these will ask for a website as part of it. This is where you place links back to you, your backlink.
