Everyone has their own preferences, but the general rule is the darker roasted coffee will be drunk with the sweeter dessert, or food items actually have many. For less coffee is roasted, it will usually be taken together with the lighter dishes of food. For example, French and Viennese Roast of us are well with chocolate and pastries.

I live in the South. Our rule of thumb is:
Morning coffee - strong. Sugar and cream if desired.
Dessert coffee - black. There's enough sugar in the dessert.
Late afternoon - medium blend, lightly sweetened.

In my neck of the woods, not too many people do a lot of Starbucks like coffees.;)

My only rule is coffee when I need it lol. As long as it's a decent cup of coffee, I'm not picky. :p

Oh, but it has to be hot.
