If advertiser competition is high for most keywords is there any point in entering that niche market?
I know a lot about the niche and can offer some good advice. I can use adsense and some affiliate products for the site but I guess getting traffic may be difficult (mike will turning in his grave as I say this!).
You think it is worth going into it or should I get a new niche topic?
I suppose if anything it would good practice?

If it is something you enjoy and are very knowledgeable about, I say go for it. There are many different things you can do to get in good with Google, so it's worth a shot!
Also, try looking for long tail keywords that may be a bit more to the point. For example, instead of "make money online," a long tail keyword would be "making money online using a blog" or "make money online writing articles." These keywords are a bit more targeted, and generally have less competition.

I agree with Kecia08.
If you still cannot find keywords you can rank for, then try another niche.
I just went through the same situation.
Wanting to promote within a market I am very, very passionate about, and would have a grand time learning more about, with awesome products and 75% commissions...I ran a comprehensive competition research only to find 12 year old domains, with tens of thousands of back links, quality I add....it would take months, even years to rank for these phrases broad match...
I could use content sites such as Squidoo...
What I decided to do is try to find a unique group to market to..with very different phrases...until I have this epiphany, I will wait.

Hi Matt,
Advertising competition is a good thing, especially if you plan to use Adsense. That's something you definitely want.
The question is how many actual site competitors are there and whether you want something that is a quicker result or a long term investment?
If it is a niche that you are going to love for the long term, it's worth investing your time and effort into it. You won't get much traffic from the pages of your site that are focused on the broader terms initially. You'll have to rely on traffic to the long tail keyword pages, like Kecia explained.
However, as your site ages and grows, you will eventually gain rank and traffic for the broader phrases. You need to ask yourself if you are willing to persevere through some very slow and tedious times because you love the subject.
Here's a thought - build two sites. Start one on the subject you know a lot about and build yourself a solid foundation of pages (30+), then continue to add a page or two a week to that site while you focus on building a second site on a much tighter niche that you can win traffic for more quickly.
That's a lot of work, but a win-win for you. You'll get the encouragement of the traffic and rankings of the narrow niche as well as building a long term business with the broader niche.
If that all sounds just too, too daunting,  just ignore my ramblings and choose a narrower niche.

Thanks for the replies and encouragement guys. guess ill keep looking for that perfect niche!
I thought of a good one today actually but i dont have the technical know-how to set up a site to accomodate it!
I just wish i had Mike 'the profit' lance's home number!!!
I'll maybe try your two-site suggestion happywife, but does that mean getting two hosting accounts? Have any of you had success with completely different products/info sites using the one site. maybe using different sub-domains? any tips ?
Im just thinking that, while the PL course is full of information, the more you understand the more questions it leads to!!

Hi Matt,
If you were already quite experienced and knew exactly what you were doing, you could build any number of sites using one hosting account and just purchasing various domain names. Of course, if you build large sites, you'll need a larger hosting package.
With SiteBuildIt, which is what I use, you get an almost unlimited amount of hosting space, but only for 1 domain per package. That's what most people consider to be the 'down side' of SBI.
However, what they don't realize is that SBI isn't selling hosting, it's the whole package/bundle that makes the $25 per month such a steal. You don't have to have any 'technical know-how' to use it because they have everything set up for you to just follow their step by step instructions.
You will learn some technical know-how along the way,  as much as you like, really, but they start you at A and take you to Z with all the tools included so that you get the most bang for your buck.
I'm not sure what you mean about 'completely different products' on one site. Do you mean different products within the same niche or completely different niches on the same site?
For instance, on my parasite site, I recommend colon cleansing products, whole food supplements, quality water filters, etc., etc.,
They are completely different products, but they all fall under the category of digestive health in some way.
I am working on starting my 4th site which will be a bit of a hodge podge of things. I don't expect it to rank as well in the search engines for that very reason. But, I'm going to do it anyway because I need a place for various non-related items I need landing pages for anyway. I decided to go ahead and use an SBI package for it because I'm so sold on how well the program works and know it will give the site the best possible chance for success . Besides, it's just a whole lot easier.

Thanks for the insight. Yeah, I don't know a lot about hosting although i've researched a bit over the last few days and have picked up some pointers.
When i say completely different products i mean unrelated. Say a sports product, and a pet product, and an info product on gardening for example. You only get one domain name with most hosts, so if i chose bestsports(dot)com as my domain name it would be pretty pointless promoting anything unrelated to sports and I would have to set up seperate sites (host packages) for the other themes.
Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick with hosting but is it possible to manipulate your one and only host package to cater for different themes. Or are you better sticking with similar niches?!
Its all so confusing!!!

Oh, just to add Angie.
You can add different domain names in your hosting account? So technically, you can have lots of different sites under the same hosting package/account?
Its just that i read in another forum that seperate sites must be under seperate accounts. Which is why i dont understand about selling different products, or having multiple sites under one account.

As I mentioned earlier, you can have a number of different domains on one hosting package of regular hosting (not with SBI).
You could have bestsports(dot)com, bestpetproducts(dot)com, bestgardeningproducts(dot)com, etc. You would pay a yearly fee for each domain name (usually under $10 each per year) and then you would pay for your hosting. If they were 'small sites' you can easily put them all on one hosting package.
Really, though, if you are just going to use 'mini sites' you may as well just make free blogs or squidoo lenses for that type of thing. Why get hosting at all?
Mini sites aren't going to really draw free targeted traffic from the search engines, so you'll have to drive traffic to the site. May as well just drive traffic to free lenses or blogs if your going to go that route.
I just think it's a better investment of time to build a full fledged site that will draw free targeted traffic from the search engines for years to come. It's a matter of preference, I think.
Does that make it a little less confusing?

Understanding your objectives and resources will give you the answer you want. More competition isn't always bad. More competition could mean higher payouts.
You have to know if this offer will help you reach your objectives and if you have the resources to effectively conduct an affiliate campaign.
