I read in one of these posts that it was a good idea to join a forum based on your interests and leave your link.
har har. I joined one, contributed, got feedback, enjoyed it, then left my link, and BAM! They crucified me! Accused me a spamming and such.
All I did was share some of my experiences. Then I left my link. I don't think I'll get much traffic from this.
I'm going to sit in the corner and lick my wounds now...

Ouch - I guess they bite in some forums then! Hmmm, after you've licked your wounds good, you might want to prowl around the forums a bit and scout them out, before you leave your tracks, eh?!
You may want to try hiding your links under other words... just a thought.

Hi simapr,
Etiquette varies from forum to forum. As pcwork mentioned, some don't allow links at all. Others require a minimum number of posts before you can leave your link without getting your head bit off. Others are laid back.
Most forums object to a one time post with a link. They all seem to agree that this is considered to be spam.
It's best to read the forum rules regarding links. Furthermore, it's probably best to make 20-30 posts and wait a good month or so before you add a sig link.
If it is a social network forum, you might not include links that lead outside of the social network...at least not at first. That way you won't get beat up :)
Which forum was it and what sort of link did you display?

I am sorry about your forum experience.!
Hey I loved the look of Hub Pages..and they really liked the first Hub I made..
Later on..I went back to add and ebook..you know to update the content , and I don't read the agreementes over and over...
so, I accidentally had 3 links to Clickbank when only 2 are allowed.
I get this rude letter ''we are going to be watching your Hub" basicaly".. you spammer ....
So..I wrote back and told them I was well...offended...and they explained they were not trying to offend and went on to say the letter was not meant to be "soft".
This SPAM thing ..people make too big a deal of it sometimes.
Should we try to send signals through the ether? Buy this...

The forum was Onewed and I used the wedding link in my signature here.
I think they have forgiven me. Somebody replied to the one who got on me and said she had given me points for my green rope.???I think that the more you post the more rope you get until you are a reputable poster.
I'm not sure if it was a compliment to me or if they were giving me enough rope to hang myself.

Sometimes you'll get jumped by a forum troll. Trolls like to bother people. The difference between a nice person having a bad day and a troll is that a nice person may lose their temper, but they apologize and quit attacking. Trolls never let up.
Hopefully, that person was just having a bad day and they won't bother you any more. If they keep it up and you feel that you don't deserve their treatment, file a complaint with the forum moderator or admin.
In any case, the best policy is not to get into it with the aggressor. That just adds fuel to their harassing fire. Try to ignore them. They'll get bored and go pick on someone else.

A lot of forums these days won't allow you to add a signature until you have posted a certain number of posts. One that I saw just recently wanted at least 250 posts before they would allow a signature! That's just a bit extreme.

I think a few posts may be good but 250 is a bit much... This is a really good forum and we don't have any such rules that I know of. Maybe we just have more integrity here.
