Hi guys, I'm new to the whole work at home thing and had a few questions I was hoping I could get answered. I don't think I really understand what Squidoo is and why it is useful. I get it has to do with your own webpage but the specifics are a bit fuzzy. The other question I had was what article directories do you find that are useful for submitting to? ezinearticles has a lot of rules and some of them seem obscure so I was hoping for a less strict place to use. Thanks for the help!

Basically, Squidoo has a high page rank, so if you put your articles on Squidoo, its more likely that you will rank higher in the search engines for specific keywords than you would with your own website.

As far as Ezinearticles is concerned, the big thing is not to be overly self promotional in the articles you submit to them, and no affiliate link are allowed - you have to link to a website in your "resource box" at the end of the article, but you may be able to link back to a Squidoo lens.

You may also want to submit your articles to USfreeds, Hubpages, Goarticles, and Article Dashboard, just to name a few.

Hi Roxy,

Getagrip answered your questions well.

I'd like to add that each Squidoo lens (web page) is free. You can create as many lenses as you like for free. Squidoo shares its authority with your lenses quite liberally so you can rank high in search engines immediately. Squidoo has quite a bit or authority juice.

Each lens is sort of like a one page blog. Folks can leave comments on your lens, rate it, favorite it, etc...It's a web 2.0 platform.

You can monetize on each lens in three different ways:

1. Coop revenue (currently Adsense and Glam ads).

2. Money modules such as eBay and Amazon.

3. Affiliate links.

You can also link from your lens to your main site to drive traffic and create back links. My highest ranking lens is a PR 5. The Page Rank was assigned very quickly.

My other lenses are PR 4 and PR 3. Juicy back links. I don't have any HTML or Music sites yet, but they are in the works. When I go live, I will certainly link to them from my Squidoo lenses. I'm carefully and slowly laying the train tracks. I'm not in any hurry

Were you wondering anything else?

I enjoy making lenses with Squidoo, although I've yet to earn anything from them.
My main traffic to my lenses comes from Ezine Articles. There is definitely a lot to be gained by writing articles which link to your lens.

You should have your own domain and site. Whether you're using ad revenue, affiliates, or marketing your own product, your own page will ALWAYS make more money than the squidoo lens.

Squidoo is a good piece of a traffic funnel. As others have stated, it's pretty easy to get PR (even though that's slowly changing as more people abuse Squidoo) and this PR can help you get ranked higher for your search terms, but Squidoo has traffic leaks.

If you're using ad networks like Adsense for your income, does it make more sense to send your article traffic to Squidoo where you split your clicks with them, or to your own page where you get 100% of the clicks? If you're promoting an affiliate product, chances are good that the ads are your COMPETITION. Even if you get the income from those clicks, each click is someone who's interested in your affiliate offer (or one like it).

The point of a traffic funnel is to get people to your offers, ad network or otherwise. When you've gotten someone to read your article and clickthru, mission accomplished! Think of it as trapping traffic. Once they're 'trapped', you'll make money from X visitors - that is, you'll make money unless you give those somewhere else to go and provide money for someone else.

Use Squidoo, use Hubpages, use blogspot or any other free sites you want in your traffic funnel, but if you're not sending them to a site where there are only 2 options (give you money, or leave), then you're shooting yourself in the foot. Remember, the traffic funnel is supposed to end up on your own website.

Hi Mountain,

You're welcome. Well, you can build more if you like. Just make sure that you do so one quality lens at a time. Quantity is fine, but quality is what counts

In January I stopped at four lenses when I could have kept going. Each lens is of high quality and I intend to make good use of that in the future. If it makes sense to make more, then feel free, else move onto something else for now

Content is king regardless of what project your are working on.

Good writing is where it is at. Keep that in front of you and you will excel.

If you submit articles to USFreeAds, are they paragraph articles like the articles you would submit ti ezine articles or goarticles.com?

I generally agree with MyOwnBoss on owning your own domain and site. That said, however, Squidoo is an excellent starting point for less tech-savvy individuals. You don't have to know any code and they have already integrated with other sites like Amazon and eBay.

Even though I run my own domains I also maintain some Squidoo lenses to experiment with different internet marketing strategies. Squidoo lenses also get indexed by Google frequently and I use them to link to new websites I put up so that Google finds them quickly.

NewbieSheild,

I have one lens and it has made it to #1310 overall and #82 in business.

When you reach the top 100 in a group do you tend to see more intra-Squidoo visitors? And does having a high ranking lens help in any way with getting indexed more quickly?

Thanks and thanks for your lens. It helped me out with the techie stuff which is always my weak point.

homebizoutlook: I am a member of Qassia as well. Last I checked we/they were still in private beta. That said, how is it you've had good luck with them?

BillChechel: If you can get in top 4 (above the fold within category) or so within a group, you should generate a little more traffic. It doesn't help you get indexed in Google any faster if you rank higher on Squidoo. The two algorithms are unrelated.

That's good news that you made it in the top 100 of a category, good for you It's the first milestone. Next try to get into top 4 with category, then top 100 overall, then top 10 overall. The last two are difficult to capture even for a single day but shoot for it anyhow - eventually.

I created the HTML Squidoo Tricks strictly as a service for the Squidoo community. I'm glad to hear that you've found it to be helpful.

Putting your lens link in this forum is a good way to get visitors to your lens.

I see that Susan52 signed your guestbook. She's one of the regulars at Squidoo. That's good that you got her attention. I ended up on her blog and perhaps with a little luck, you will too. To get the Squidoo lensmasters to visit your lens and to get some star ratings, sign up for and participate in their forum.

You can also get them to show up on your lens by visiting other lenses and signing their guestbooks (and rating their lenses, favoriting them, etc). Establish a presence in the community and you should be able to get some action.

Good luck,

I have created a squidoo lens, but has anyone used pingoat or pingomatic to notify directories of updates. If so does it have a knock on effect to help increase the number of lens visitors?

I want to creat another lens but one that could really start earning me some money to help offset my advertising costs for my other business.

How would you go about designing a lens based only on income generation. I understand you will always have to have some great content to attract people, but how do you come up with the intial topic or idea.

I use my first lens to promote my other business. It was never intended to generate income it was more to generate leads.

It would be nice to hear some input on this topic.

Hi Bill,

The best thing to do is to make a lens on something you are quite familiar with or to learn about something you are very interested in and then create the lens.

You should be able to drill down into the topic via keyword research tool to find something that you can monetize upon.

For a Squidoo lens, you can add both monetization modules and your own affiliate links. If the lens ranks within 2,000 overall for the monthly average, you can also do alright with the coop revenue. So, three ways to monetize.

Did that answer your question?

Squidoo is an useful tool and allows you to set up your pages, called lens, very quickly. You can update the page constantly to add new contents and yes, you get results from search engines.

Hi Pegarrett,

I'm glad that you found a how-to to be helpful. Were you referring to my Squidoo How To lens?

I have used pingomatic.com but not sure if it is effective or not. They say to ping after each update of your lens and I have been doing that but I don't notice any difference in traffic.
