I think it is a great niche - I have some sites on it, but haven't spent a lot of time on them.

What I usually do when I have a brainstorm is go play in the keyword sandbox at seobook.com - that will pretty much tell you what people are searching for and whether or not it will be a hard niche to go with.

By the way, your link in your sig isn't working for me... you might want to check that.

Hi Whocares,

Dieting is quite competitive. That isn't to say that you can't be creative and find a side door in ;)

The first question you might ask yourself is: Do I love the topic, am I an expert on the topic or am I willing to learn a lot about it, and will I be able to write about it for at least 2-3 years (indefinitely is better)?

or

Am I just in it for the money?

Hopefully you'll answer YES to the first three part question and NO to the second question.

Having passion and expertise is critical to long term profits. Obviously there would have to be a decent potential for profit involved unless you just like to write.

However, money shouldn't be the main driving force else you'll get bored, you'll be short on sub topics, and folks will be able to detect your lack of passion and expertise.

They won't trust you. They won't buy from you. They won't tell their friends about your site. They won't return to your site. You'll have quite a bit more difficulty in obtaining quality back links. It's best to write about what you like and know well.

Maybe you can figure out a good dieting sub topic to get into that you know quite a bit about or are willing to learn about because it's interesting.

The good news is that we have a big overweight epidemic that is likely to worsen as time moves on. There's definitely a lot of money in that topic and related topics.

Personally I don't believe in dieting per se. I believe good old common sense - sensible eating and exercise.

Think about what you have enjoyed throughout life and/or have been good at. I'm sure that you're an expert on several things if you just sit down and brain storm. Write down or type the things you come up with.

It's okay to spend a few days on it. Sometimes when you sleep on something, new ideas come up. Three or four days should do ;)

Good luck,

~Newbie Shield~

That's a nice site.

NS is right , though... I would recommend browsing thru places like Clickbank and Commission Junction to find stuff you can have fun with and go with it.... if the dieting thing turns out to be too broad of a niche.

Newbie Shield, about the dieting, I am not an expert, just want to put up a site and talk from my own experience. I got this idea since me and my wife tried many diets we found online but we didn't have the commitment needed for the long run and thus we failed. We did that for over a year.
After a year I told my wife that maybe we should pay for a diet plan/support group. She was against it at first but eventually got convinced. I have to tell you, it worked like a charm! It was the money spent on the diet that kept us going for over 10 months (and going)!

So I wanted to put up a site telling our story...

Hi Whocares,

Actually, it sounds like you are an expert - at least in regards to that sort of support group.

I think it would be an excellent idea to put up a site and tell your story.

That sort of thing would be popular and you could help a heck of a lot of people.

I know a few folks that are overweight and who have failed with various dieting programs. I think your idea is great!

I hope that you do it and please let us know how it goes.

Hey Whocares,

Although the diet niche is huge it is always hungry. There are millions of people looking for diet books, diet programs ect. If you simply dig deeper into the niche there is so much untapped consumers looking for anything to help them. For example if you type in "how to lose baby weight" there are just over 13000 finds in google. Not a bad market to hit up and seems that competition would not be bad. This is only an example. But say if you type is "how to lose baby fat" you get 5500 returns. This is a prime market for any diet product. So if you are told its hard in the diet industry just keep digging into niche after niche. Sub-niches are the money makers. Just one fact for you. There is over 166 000 000 on google for the word "diet". This is also a billion dollar industry per year. Im sure you can sell to many of these people. Im most sure you will do very well in it.

Happy Hunting
