Hi Everyone,

First I want to say Thank You Vishal for this great forum! Also a Thanks to all the posters with the wealth of information I have gotten here since I started reading.

I have been studying Internet Marketing for the past 10 days. Putting in at least 2 hours a day, sometimes 8 hours. I knew before I started that this was NOT a "get rich quick" endeavor and now that I have started learning about it I'm finding this business will take ALOT of work to get going.

I have been involved with computer service since 1974 so know my way around some. I had a computer repair company in the mid 80's when the business was booming and made the mistake of hiring on with one of my clients (Long story and really not relevant).

I know what it takes to operate a business and I know enough about the Internet to get myself in trouble, I even have a marketing course under my belt, but this, at the moment, seems to be a whole different animal.

I started by taking the free Affiliate Masters course at SBI currently stuck on day 3 cause I need to come up with a concept. I really don't want to do anything with computers cause my whole idea is to have a new direction.

I'm reading about Blogs, Directory lists and article writting. Free web hosting, paid web hosting and other free courses to learn from.

I know that SBI and WA are both good programs but don't want to invest in either of them until I have some sort of direction. I feel that if I start out using all the free resources first I will then be able to make a better and Informed decision later.

Right now I feel like that ball in that old game of Pong and am really spinning my wheels and going nowhere.

Sorry if I'm rambling here but need some advise of where a good place to start would be.

Thanks for reading

Hi Galenen,

You're right, this is a great forum.

Congrats on your past success in the computer biz.

It's always overwhelming at first. To give you some relief and some direction, I suggest focusing on defining the main elements of online marketing as a first step so that you have a general idea of what is involved.

You might start by checking out the 30 Day Challenge. It's free and here is the link:

www.thirtydaychallenge.com

After you do that, you might play around with some free methods for a few months to learn by experience as you continue to read and interact on this forum. You might also read from various online marketing sites so that you can drill down into each category.

When you've soaked up the free stuff and gained some experience, you might choose a paid program. Which program depends upon your personal style.

Though I am not a member or affiliate of either SBI or Wealthy Affiliate (WA), I think that those are the two best paid options to date. Honest Riches 3.0 may also be a contender though I doubt that it measures up to the former two. Profit Lance is another fairly good choice but certainly not my first recommendation.

SBI specializes on the longevity or tortoise approach whereas WA specializes more on multiple mini sites and cashing in on trends - a bit more like the hare.

Personally, I'm more of a tortoise but I see the value in cashing in on trends.

I hope that this will offer something of a framework for you so that you don't feel quite so overwhelmed.

Let us know how it goes,

~Newbie Shield~

Welcome Galenen and I think from reading your post that you are about to get some grip on that ping pong table, and when you do, you will be off with a roar.

In all seriousness though, yes, it does take time and you are doing the right thing by trying the free stuff first. I have not used WA but have built an SBI site.

I know SBI focuses on helping you get a site out there that will generate its own google traffic for a VERY long time - free traffic - and it DOES work.

(I very distinctly remember when I was about at day 3 - 5... I am amazed at how much hair I have left! I personally think that is the dividing line between the get rich quickers and the motivated go getters - lol)

I had built a site in a very hard niche - it was a "tips for moms working at home site" and even though I never got it over the hump because if the hard niche , I still got about 30 visitors every day and I did NOTHING to that site for months so the concept works.

(truth is you need many visitors for it to monetize - I made a few bucks off it but not enough - happywife may stop by soon but she has a chocolate site that gets a TON of visitors now after building lots of content, content, content as they say at SBI)

When I have time to build another one, the niche will be totally different and am contemplating one but don't quite have all the pieces together yet - I am using blogs and Squidoo and I have a campaign going that I think will be fairly easy to do with SBI so now I just have to find the time - need to get a few kids grown and gone - lol

edited - hope I got all the grammar correct this time - the first round I had a 'diving line' up top - lol

Thanks Mountainmom5 and Newbie Shield. I just started looking at 30daychallenge. I had read about it but had not fully looked into it. So far it does look like a good place to start and will help me get some traction.

I'm taking this all slow and easy. I'm simply amazed at all the scams out there, but they would not be doing them if so many people didn't fall for them.

This is going to be a very interesting project to say the least, and I have to be careful with my hair too LOL.

Hello Galen and congratulations on starting this venture. The rewards in online marketing are grand once you can get to them, and I must say from what I have read you are off to a very good start.

The only advice I will give you is the advice that I give most newbies in your position. You are doing well to educate yourself as much as possible, but don't do it so much as you will get "Analysis Paralysis". That means that you will be overloaded with so much information, and the pursuit of acquiring more, that you will never try anything.

At some point, no matter how much research you do, you have to get out there and get dirty. All the information in the world on internet marketing will not get you one thin dime unless you get out there and do something with it.

By no means am I saying go out there unprepared, but start making a plan of action today about what you want to do, and give yourself a reasonable deadline to get started. You will be angry at yourself if you don't.

I know exactly what you mean.

My plan at the moment is to get through this 30 day challenge. So far the info I'm getting there is setting up some new tools. If the rest of the program is as good I should be getting REAL dirty soon.

A wise choice going with the 30DC it's the best way to begin for an affiliate marketer with little or no money.

I may have to look into this 30DC myself. It seems pretty good. But you are doing fine, just keep at it, and you will find what you want to do!

I completely understand where you're coming from. I just recently got out of the Marine Corps after serving 8 years honorably. These first couple of months I have been loading so much information into my brain I began to get headaches.

But it's the hunger in use that keeps us going. Is it not?

Stay focused on one street at a time and when you come to the next intersection then make your next move.

Semper Fi!

Don't overload yourself with information.
You will feel very lost.

Start with something that you know/just learned. Processing increase one by one.

Too much information will get you nowhere.
This is my personal experience.
