i was wondering how web sites work to sell other companys products. do you get a percentage of whats sold or is it just a advertizing fee? then how do you go about getting involved with diffrent companys to be able to sell there products?

Its really complicated, so I don't want to go into too much detail, but basically, you send traffic to company websites, and when someone purchases through your link, you get a commission. Some commissions are as high as 75% of the purchase price of the product (usually for digital products that can be downloaded), but for physical products, the commissions are usually between 3% to 15% of the sales price.

Typically, you are paid a certain percentage for the sale of someone else's product. There are also other instances when you get to have full rights for a product and you get paid 100% for the sale.

Hey erxloes,

It's pretty much as our two friends above say.

1. You get a percentage of what's sold

As getagrip says, a commission. The more products you sell, the more you get...

2. Alternatively you get paid for advertising sites

Such as pay-per-clicks (PPC). These are best on very high traffic sites as you may only get $1 for every 1000 visitors (perhaps an extreme example!) but targeted visitors (who actually convert to a sale at the advertisor's site) will get you paid more, though typically very little ($1-5) compared to commission sales ($10-50+)).

I'd concentrate on using no.1 first. There's a couple of good online income packages which will guide you through the process in terms of setting this up. But be wary of potential scams.

You'll get a good idea of which ones are good from this forum.

Good luck mate.

You can actually do both. Most people start out just referring other people's products and earning an agreed upon commission from sales. That's called "affiliate marketing."

It's really not complicated at all. The hardest part is choosing a niche topic that you want to build a site around and then putting the time and effort into researching the keywords that people are using to look for information about that particular topic and writing the appropriate content on your site.

If you don't have web building experience, there are companies that are designed to teach you to build a successful web business around a particular topic or niche. The company I learned through and still use is SBI.

Once you have your basic foundation laid (a minimum number of pages built and traffic flowing in), then you start referring products as related to your niche topic.

In order to find companies that have affiliate programs you can join relating to your niche, you can either do a google search (ex: flat screen TV + affiliate) and find companies that way. Or, you can apply to some of the affiliate clearinghouses like Commission Junction, Linkshare, Google Affiliate Network, Clickbank, etc., and browse through their categories or do an internal search for related products.

You may be rejected from some companies for one reason or another, but if you build an attractive site with quality content, you will be approved to most affiliate programs.

If you have a topic in mind that you really enjoy, that is often the best subject to build a site around. You'll still need to do a bit of research to determine supply and demand as well as the best keywords to use when writing your content, but there is usually a market for almost any subject you may think of. And it's a lot easier to write intelligently about a subject you know or love.

You asked about advertising, too. You can get paid for allowing advertising on your site. You can do that one on one, but the easiest way when getting started is to just sign up for Google Adsense or something comparable and they will give you some "code" to place on your site. This code will make related ads appear on your site that coincide with the topic of the page.

Whenever one of these ads is clicked on by a visitor, you get paid part of the advertising fee that Google collects from the advertiser. Some people aren't big Adsense fans, but it's still my most profitable form of income on my sites, and I really love the concept.

If that all sounds like "Greek" to you, there are some free ebooks and resources on the subject of affiliate marketing, and how to Make Your Content Presell, etc., that you can download and read at your leisure. They were a big help to me when I was starting out and really made a difference in how quickly I learned the process.

Hope that helped a bit.
Blessings,
Angie

Agreed - There are two main ways to "monetize" your website.

Affiliate marketing through one of any of the many reputable affiliate wholesalers out there. Find something that you know about or want to know about and start generating information that will drive traffic to your website. Traffic = Sales = Commission for you.

PPC is the other way to monetize your website. One of the top PPC's out there right now is Google Adsense. Adsense tracks all of the page clicks and ad clicks and lets you know how much you have made. The same equation applies, Traffic = Sales = Commission. As it has been metioned before however, this method works well for high traffic websites and brings in significantly lower commissions.

I would like to add if you can create your own product like an e-book this will make you more than anything however you still have to get people to the site that's a task all of it's own. I use article marketing mostly. Keep researching and be careful of scams.

If you're a complete newbie you may want to check out the 30 Day Challenge it's FREE and you will be in good hands. Just google it and you will find all the info on it. Good luck.

I like what you're saying, Aplina and Sonni.

I'm pretty new to this myself - purchased My Online Income System 2 or 3 weeks back so have been sort of following that when I've had the chance.

Though recently I went off track thinking about the whole niche idea as I was having to wait a week for article approval... (need to get back on track!)

So even though I'm not even a third way through the MOIS course, I'm starting to think about the niche stuff - I was mightily impressed with your gardening website aplina I may come to you for advice once I've completed the 60 day action plan.

And good words from Sonni, personal ebooks sound good to me. What I would say is try and do something original - easiest when it's a subject close to your heart as your own opinions will come through. That way you won't be competing so much - that's how you leap ahead!

Good luck to all!
