What are some of the biggest mistakes that you guys made when you started your home business? My list is long but trying to start without a website was the worst for me.

I had read so many times that you didn't need a website to make money, but really you do. It just makes it a lot easier that way.

Come on guys and gals, pour your hearts out and don't be ashamed of your mistakes, learn from them and move on.

My oh-Noo moment was when I divulged $527 in hopes of making it in a MLM business opportunity... this had to be a monthly recurrent fee ... and I was supposed to be breaking even by the third month and making a profit by the 4th...
Of course by the first month I was supposed to be making about 25% that $527 in returns....
after the first month I had made zero dollars and there was no second month to figure out whether or not my chances would have improved.....

Mine was when I paid $299 for training and software for Medical Claims Processing. There isn't any work in this field!! That's what I get for not checking the company out on the BBB site first!!

Mine was sending out 1000s of advertising flyers for one of my websites and getting virtually no response.

Stick to free web promotional techniques, all it costs you is your time!

My mistake was thinking I would actually get paid for those online surveys i completed, after having signed up for so many 7 day free trial offers, and then spending all my time canceling them. Now I wonder who really makes the money with those

Publishing a website, and then realizing I published the content on the wrong website. OOPS!

I hear you c michon...I got sucked into the pseudo-surveys too...luckily, I got smart quick and found real surveys. You can get paid for doing surveys for sure. You just have to be with real, market research ones, and not the scammy ones that sucked us in.

Publishing a website, and then realizing I published the content on the wrong website. OOPS!

I did that once! I published the homepage for one website onto another website. So my website had the home page of my other website on it. I overwrote it by mistake as they are all called "index."

Fortunately I had backed up my files and fixed it, but those were some frantic moments and I don't know how many visitors I had before I realized the mistake ... they'd have been confused!

Got banned from Craig's List... That sucked, but I did learn a lot from it.

I actually got suckered into buying te INTRO package for that free and clear program. Talk about feeling dumb. I still have the books and stuff around if anyone needs to prop up a coffee table leg or anything. I tried lining the bird cage with it but even the birds wouldn't do the deed on that stack of crap.

Deleted entire site once, didn't have it backed up either. Took me 3 days of damn near non-stop work to get it back up where it was. I started using dreamweaver shortly after

Mine was spending lots of money advertising my website with Google Adwords, but I realized there's more I can do with that money.

I just created a new one for myself today
Befor I cam into work I placed some new stuff on my site using dreamweaver. I personally use firefox to surf the web so I always check my site there to see if it is ok and all. Well to make a long story short I was in a rush this morning and threw some stuff up on my site saved it and was goign to wait to upload it tonight once everything was done. Well when I exited dreamweaver it did an auto upload and I didn't have time to check it using both firefox and dreamweaver.

So I get to work this morning and check it using IE and low and behold I look like a moron with half my page being screwed up....home page even

Chalk 1 more bonehead move up for me.
Now all day my site is going to look even more like garbage that normal :*(

My biggest mistake is trying too many things, looking for and buying too many ubiquitous $30 dollar reports that always reveal all the latest "insider secrets". I guess I have learned something along the way from all those reports, but there's no secret system that will automate everything.

Story 1 of 2:

Back in 1996 I was teaching myself html. I wasn't good at it yet. So I was using a staple gun to put flyers all over the city...telephone poles, laundro-mats, cars, you name it. I wouldn't do that any more since I feel it's very obnoxious. But back then I was very grass roots.

Anyways, though I did get a good response - 22%, I also got a response from an unusual guest.

The cops gave a call stating that it was illegal to post on telephone poles. They explained that the law was new but I had to go take them all down.

Story 2:

Once I learned html and got tired of walking around promoting my then off-line company, I did upload my first site to the web.

With my first website back in 1997 I created two versions of the site. All the pages of the first version had .html extensions. The pages of the second version had the exact same name but ended in a .htm.

The server company was good but their caching system obviously sucked as random pages from either the first or the second version would show up for each visitor.

The server company had to delete both versions and I had to upload the new version. It worked fine after that.

It wasn't my fault at all and it's not the perfect story for this thread except that it's kinda funny. It stressed me out to the max.

I have had several oooh-no moments over the past several years and reading some of the posts on here actually reminded me of some of them -

Like the time I did the money chain thing - so first I go make hundreds of copies to stuff into the envelopes and bought a list of names to send these out to... BUT then I actually bought stamps for all those envelopes...

By this time I was feeling rather sick and really oooh-no but I am not a quitter so I thought I might as well send them all out but I was not going to let the mailman see me mailing all those envelopes out so I took them to the big blue box outside the P.O. and chucked them all in there -

You guessed it, it wasn't worth it and I lost several hundred dollars in the deal....oh well, live and learn!
