The Gunpowder Plot..

Guy Fawkes and his conspirators were discovered trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament.. early terrorists I suppose...they planted a lot of explosives under the H of P but they were stopped.. Ever since we have celebrated it by building bonfires and putting the 'Guy' on top of it.. then eat lots of nice food watching the guy burn...

It also coincides with an ancient pre-christian ritual/celebration.. the ending of summer I think.. holding back the darkness of winter with a bonfire.. whatever the origins... it's a great excuse to get rid of loads of rubbish by burning inthe back garden and eating!

( although with all the fireworks exploding tonight it sounds like The Somme!)

Hey, it's pre-America time so I am okay with the celebration. Still, he fought the Spaniards many times. I'd say he actually helped England more than he hindered them.

According to Wikepedia, "...Fawkes was ranked 30th in the 2002 list of "100 Greatest Britons", sponsored by the BBC and voted for by the public. He was also included in a list of the 50 greatest people from Yorkshire..."

All the same, happy burning!
