Hello netjobs,

Quite some time ago, I opened an eBay store for goods used to fund a non-profit organization. I found it did very well, but I think the main reason for that was the pricing of the goods made available, PLUS a money back guarantee if, for whatever reason, the customer wasn't satisfied.

But as far as 'earning well' what is that figure for you?

I still have my basic subscription, which I believe is around $10 a month to run, and am seriously thinking of opening it up again, with different products. Every little bit helps!

Thanks! What about shipping inbound/outbound packaging? Did you store products? If so, internal or external storage. If no, did you order from manufacturer per receipt?

This information would be greatly appreciated; I plan on selling a few personal items first, such as MJ Basketball cards, printer, Nintendo perhaps, etc. I basically want to understand the basics then move to being a moderate size merchant. I need to broaden my horizon for a passive income!

Hello fiberoptical,

Most of the items were shipped from overseas but I had quite a large inventory that I stored in my tiny tiny apartment.

I first determined exactly how much my packaging supplies ran me per item and then added just that amount to purchase order.

Some people who run eBay stores jack up the shipping and handling charges, so please try to avoid that.

One of the best things you can do as a new eBay store owner is to pack your items with care. And make sure your item descriptions are accurate. People appreciate honesty.

I always included a personal Thank You note, with a flyer that showed what I was trying to move that month, with the eBay store address and my Post Office contact info. Adding a Hotmail or Yahoo email addy just for use with your eBay store will give your customers the chance to contact you without having to go through the eBay system.

Answer any email inquiries or concerns promptly, always be polite, and definitely offer a money back guarantee.

Good Luck!

eBay has a very good 'How-To' section in their site. There is an area for sellers and an area for buyers. It's a good idea to read both.

They tell you how to take photos, and then link your photos to your store, in addition to advice on creating the text to go with your items, help on setting prices and the different kinds of bidding systems they have.

They also have links that help you build your store and show you how to do all that.

There is also a book called 'eBay for Dummies' that is very easy to follow and explains how the entire system works.

You know, I had a couple of friends that hit the 'Big Lots' stores and Dollar Stores and just bought stuff. There are people all around the world who don't have access to the simplest items and so, believe me, you can sell anything on eBay. Just make sure you don't try to sell junk.

Start small. Go to the Dollar Store, for example, and buy something that won't break easily, and is small to start. You can also hit the bookstores when they have the sales or the record stores and buy DVD's, CD's, etc. There is a demand for lots of stuff like that overseas.

And put your 'wholesale websites' into your search bar and see what you come up with.

Or start with some used items you already own, but that are in working condition and practice selling those first.

I've had some experience with Ebay, but finding products to sell is the most difficult part. If you can create a digital product to sell which solves some kind of problem, such as an ebook, that might be your best bet, since once a digital product is created, there is virtually no overhead for it, and you don't have to worry about inventory and stuff like that.

Personally, I'd like to get back into ebay and am going to try doing so by writing a few digital products on weight loss and making money online. The key is to sell a good quality ebook for 99 cents, and then include an affiliate link to a related product that gives you a commission of say $10 or $20.

Other than that, I think you really need a lot of money - like $500 to purchase a whole sale lot of some kind.
