I have a job that will involve me doing technical support for an IT company from home. Since I have never had a job working from home I am not used to the hiring process not being very streamlined.

I have had formal interviews and I have been given the position to start soon. My question is .. what should they be paying for (by law) and or what should I be concerned about. The job equipment simply requires a computer, seperate phone line and headset. They were not up front with me about what I needed really. When I asked them they said - just regular land-line phone connection - they will re-imburse me for the cost of it. But it has been assumed that I will be using my own computer - being that it is capable to do the work I would like them to provide me with one so that I don't have to use my personal one (even if I probably wouldn't mind it). Should I ask them anyway?

Then raises the question - by law are they required to provide me with work or company owned equipment other than my own?
So I will be needing a headset - and I can imagine a decent one could cost up to 50 dollars. But I am going to make sure they cover the cost of that.

I am just wondering if anyone knows the general guidelines of this, they are faxing me paperwork to fax back to them that will put me into their system as well.

I am just looking for some feedback and maybe some suggestions.

If they said they will re-imburse you, I think they are within their legal rights as long as you agreed to it up front...you may want to contact your state's labor office for more information about that.

You may also want to look the company up online to make sure they are legit - it helps to do research if anything seems "shady".

No it is not a shady company. This is a real job. I actualy got the job through a friend who has known the guy who interviewed me for a very long time. They are legit.

But I was thinking that people on this forum might know what the laws are.

Good to know that it is legit. Like I said, I think you would be best off to contact your state's department of labor to find out what the specific laws are. Either that, or you can try searching on Google for a legal forum, and perhaps you could find an answer for your question.

They should be able to provide you some sort of document or something in writing as far as what their policies are regarding the requirements and reimbursements, if they are doing this on any large scale.


If it is simply a local company hiring you to work for them, it may be different...

if you did sign the papers / your contract there should be some agreedment there stating what they will provide . you will also have to ask them

For a big company, you may have to formally complete some paper work. For a single assignment, only correspondence is usually adequate

It was a simple offer letter that stated pay and sick day information. It did not state anything in regard to what their policy may be on reimbursement for equipment and such.

I know they will pay for my phone line and a 19.99 ish headset. But maybe I should ask to get in contact with the person who handles costs and ask for a policy statement.

Just ask for a down payment or if the contract is for a weekly payment, don't budge if they are late in paying for the first week.

Some scams refuse to pay even on the first billing while others will pay you initially and there will come a time when they will pretend to to just be late and keep you working.
